PART 1

"It feels so good to be going home."
"Going home in more ways than one."
"Thanks, Gabrielle."
"For what?"
"Pointing the way back to my rotten old self."
"It's a pleasure ... Did I do that?"
"I didn't think about it at the time, but when I asked for a sign to show that I was doing the right thing, you showed up."
"You know what they say -- timing is everything."
"Yeah, well, not everything."

The campfire was quiet as everyone was in their own thoughts.
Xena looked up over the flames at Gabrielle. She smiled to herself not knowing why and looked back down, only to look up to catch Gabrielle's eyes. She looked away.
Gabrielle looked at Amarice who was asleep and at Joxer who was also asleep. She looked over at Xena and felt tears form in her eyes but didn't know why. "Xena."
"Hmm?" She looked up.
"Come with me for a walk."
"K." She set down her mending and stood up. Looking at Gabrielle's face, she could tell that something was bothering Gabrielle.
When they were far enough from listening ears, Gabrielle stopped and sat down.
Xena leaned up against a tree and turned to Gabrielle. "What is it?"
"I've been thinking....alot. Only thing to do."
"And?"
Gabrielle looked up and Xena could see the unshed tears. In an instant, she had Gabrielle in her arms, whispering reassuring words in her ear. She frowned as she heard Gabrielle start to cry. "Talk to me."
"I can't. I mean..I don't even know where to begin."
"Just start wherever."
Nothing.
"Gabrielle." She felt the shake of the head against her chest. "Talk to me."
Nothing.
"I can't help you unless you tell me what's wrong."
Nothing.
"Gabrielle."
Gabrielle pulled back and looked into Xena's face. "I have something to tell you."
"Well I'm already sitting down, so go ahead."
Gabrielle smiled. "Xena...I... I can't. I thought I could but I can't." She moved to stand but Xena held her tight. "Xena let me go. I can't do this." The hold didn't let up.
"I can't do that Gabrielle. There is something wrong and you aren't going anywhere till we talk."
Gabrielle bit her lip as she looked into the blue eyes and looked away.
"Gabrielle."
A tear worked its way down a cheek. "I..."
"Don't even say it."
"I wanna...I mean I really want to...but..." She couldn't figure out how to say what she wanted to and just decided to show her. She moved a hand to the back of Xena's head and pulled her down for a kiss.
Xena pulled away. "Gabrielle wait.."
"What?"
"What are you doing?"
"Oh by the gods, I was wrong?" She hid her head in her hands.
"Wrong about what?"
"I'm in love with you, Xena. I thought you fe.... Forget it." She tried to pry herself from Xena's hold.
"Wait, where are you going?"
"Hide in a hole."
Xena's eye brow raised. "Hole?"
Gabrielle turned away. "Just let me go and hide in peace. I feel bad enough okay." She once again tried to get away. "Xena." She looked up into the blue eyes and almost melted at the love shining through them. "Xena you...."
"Shh." Xena raised a hand to Gabrielle's cheek and stroked it softly.
"Xena.....I..."
"I know." She pulled Gabrielle's face to hers and captured her lips in a soft kiss.
Gabrielle pulled away and leaned her head down on the leather covered chest. "Does this mean that..."
"Yes." She laid her cheek down on top of the blonde head and closed her eyes.
Gabrielle opened her eyes and turned to her side to see the fire had gone out. She sat up and looked around at her friends. As far as she could tell everyone was asleep. She turned to Xena and smiled as she saw her sleeping peacefully for the first time in a long time. She laid back down and looked up at the stars. Turning on her back, she felt a hand enclose hers. With a long happy sigh she closed her eyes. 'It could happen.'
