by Sarah Miller

Disclaimer:
Doesn't change. You know the who's and where's so lets not get into that.

Violence:
No

Subtext: Yes please.  A little playing between two women who are deeply in love.

Sex: No sorry, but the way it ends, you can only guess what happens next. :-)

Not one of my best, but its fun just the same. A bit of a twist and maybe not understandable but try to have fun reading it. I had run writing it. The way its written makes it seem like it may be a dream. I'm interested in what you have to say. As always my address is sarahmiller17@yahoo.com

Don't like this one. Try some others I've done. My favorite is The Lion and the Panther.

Enjoy!!!!!

"Promise me one thing....you'll follow your heart and don't worry about me."

"You're part of my heart Gabrielle. You've been so good for me. I don't think I would ever have let myself feel the way I feel now about Ulysses if it weren't for you teaching me how to love."

--

Xena woke as a large crack of thunder sounded over the skies of Greece. She sat up and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, taking notice that the light of day had not yet arrived. She yawned as she stretched out her arms. Looking around she saw what was left of their fire from last night. She grabbed some wood and laid it onto the glowing embers, all the while poking the fire.

With a warm fire again, she stood up and continued to stretched the sleep out of the rest of her body. She poured some water into a pot and set it to warm over the fire. Grabbing her sword, she walked out of the cave to catch breakfast.

Gabrielle smiled as she smelled rabbit cooking. She opened her eyes and turned to see Xena by the fire cooking. "Do you want me to do that?" She saw Xena jump. "Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you."

Xena nodded. "Hope rabbit is okay, not much else out there in this weather."

Gabrielle looked up and for once noticed the storm. "Wow, when did that get here?"

"Sometime this morning."

"Oh." Gabrielle sat up and stretched her tired muscles. "Where are we off to now?"

"For now no where. I don't like the look of this storm." She glanced out at the rain.

"So we get a break?"

"Looks that way."

"Great." She crawled over to the fire. "So where are we anyway?"

"Somewhere north of Thebes. Why?"

"Just wondering. Great tree. How did you find it?"

"Stumbled onto it."

"I don't remember coming here."

"You fell asleep."

"Oh. That would explain why I didn't know then, huh." She looked at Xena trying to lighten her mood. No luck. "Cheer up, Xena. Its not like a day or so are gonna kill you."

"Gabrielle."

"I know, never mind." She turned from her and stood up. "I'm going to..you know." She ran away to relieve herself.

Xena shook her head and smiled as she continued with their food.

Xena stole a glance at Gabrielle, who was laying down on her bedroll, fast asleep. She smiled and    sighed. "What am I going to do with you?" She shook her head and laid down herself. Not to sleep but to relax. She heard the soft snoring of Gabrielle and started to laugh soundly to herself.

Giving Gabrielle a half an hour to nap, she crawled over and gently shook her. "Gabrielle, wake up."

Gabrielle swatted her hands away and turned onto her stomach.

"Gabrielle."

Gabrielle rolled onto her side. "One more minute."

Xena shook her head and smiled. She pinched Gabrielle's nose with two fingers and it wasn't long    before Gabrielle opened her eyes and pushed Xena's hands away. Xena laughed and let her sleep.  She moved to the fire and found herself dozing off as well.

--

"Gabrielle. Gabrielle. It's me. I'm not dead."

Gabrielle cries. "Xena."

"At least, not completely."

"Why? Why did you leave? There's so many things I want to say to you."

"Gabrielle. You don't have to say a word. We don't have much time. I need to get to the Ambrosia, otherwise I will be gone."

"Xena, I can't lose you again."

"Gabrielle, I'll always be here."

A soft kiss that awakens feelings long forgotten.

--

Xena opened her eyes quickly and looked around. "What was that?" She looked down into the fire to remember. She took a deep, slow breath and it was obvious she did remember. She    watched the fire for what seemed like hours. Nothing came to her mind but that small, simple memory. She closed her eyes and drifted off again.

--

"Xena, I know you can hear me wherever you are. I know you always told me to be strong.  But I can't be, not now. You can't leave me. I know it's not your time. I can feel it in my heart. I feel this emptiness that I have never felt before and it scares me. Above all, just remember your destiny and fight, just fight to come back. This world needs you, I need you."

--

She smiled to herself. "How could I have forgotten that?" She took a deep breath. "Now what? I never was good at this sort of thing. I know I should just....." She stopped her sentence short when she heard Gabrielle stir. She turned to watch and saw her roll over onto her back. When she was sure she was asleep, she turned back around to the fire. She closed her eyes to sort out anymore lost memories.

--

"I know, wisdom before weapons."

"I'll keep this for the time being."

"Hah! It's not like your breasts are dangerous enough....that was a joke you can laugh."

--

"Some joke my bard. Some joke." She couldn't believe all the different visions coming to her. Had she held them in so long that she had forgotten them? She didn't know where they were hiding but knew that they were coming now and she couldn't stop them. She turned over to look at Gabrielle and saw she was still sleeping. "Someday." She turned back to the fire.

Sitting for another few hours, she couldn't stand it any longer and moved from the fire. She heard Gabrielle wake up and sit in front of the fire. "Hey."

"Morning."

"Sleep well?"

"Yes, did you....sleep at all?" She looked at Xena's bedroll and knew the answer. "You didn't.  Something wrong?"

"No, well yes actually but I wouldn't want to...."

"Tell me." She sat down next to Xena and waited.

"Do you remember the time we ran into Ulysses?"

"I do."

"What did you think of that?"

"What do you mean?"

"If I had chosen to leave and travel with him, or have him travel with us, what would you do?"

"I would be happy for you." Her face was expressionless.

"Okay."

"Is that all?"

"No."

"Go on then."

Xena took a deep breath. "No, never mind."

"Xena, come on. It might help to get things off your chest."

"Chest." She laughed privitly to herself.

"Okay. I have no idea what's wrong but its starting to get contagious." She felt herself laughing softly.

"No, I was just thinking about the time you bought that breast dagger."

"Oh, yeah. I was in big trouble wasn't I?"

"I was pretty mad yes. But what I was thinking about is what you said to me."

"What did I say?" She laughed. "Oh yeah I remember. Something about your breasts being dangerous enough right."

"Yeah."

They laughed together for a few more minutes.

"Xena."

"What?"

"There is something that I've been thinking about."

"What is that?"

"The time you died..... In the forest, with..." She stopped.

"What is it?"

Gabrielle looked into her eyes. 'Xena, you kissed me. Why?' She couldn't say those words out loud. "Never mind. I'll be right back." She stood and walked away into the woods.

"Oh Gabrielle. If only this wasn't as hard as it's seeming."

--

"I let my fear and hatred blind me to everything."

"Sometimes the past can do that. If I had been through...."

"No. You understand hatred, but you've never given into it. You don't know how much I love....that."

--

Gabrielle ran back to camp. The vision she had just had, had given her a new problem and she needed to discuss this with Xena.

"Xena."

"Hmm."

"I need to ask you something."

"What?"

"That time when we had to deal with the horde, you had come to me while I was healing the men.  You told me about how your fear and hatred had blinded you to everything. I said that the past can do that and you told me that I understand hatred but had never given in to it and then you said that I don't know how much you love...that. Love what Xena?"

"Love what?"

"That's what I asked. You never actually finished the sentence. What is that? Were you wanting to say something else?"

"No."

"Oh. I just wanted to make sure." She stood up and walked away from Xena, tears threatening to spill out.

Xena watched her walk away and sighed. "Wait, come here." She waited until Gabrielle had come closer. "Sit down." She did. "That was a hard time for both of us. I did a lot of things that I regret but it was you who had saved us. Because you looked for the good in everyone, you were able to figure out that we shouldn't of been at war. Very brave of you to stand up against that."

Gabrielle nodded. "And?"

"And I did try to tell you something back there but I.....lost the nerve."

"What did you want to tell me?"

"I wanted to tell you that.....that I love you, am in love with you, and always have been." She looked away and saw Gabrielle looking down at the fire. "I know its not the greatest time but I just needed you to know. I should of told you then. Can you forgive me for being a coward?"

"You are not a coward. I'm the coward. I've known that I have been in love with you since the first time I saw you and I haven't said a word."

"I guess we are both cowards."

"So now what?" She looked up at Xena.

"I don't know."

"May I suggest something?"

"What?" Her heart dropped.

"Lets take a swim."

Xena relaxed. "A swim? In this weather."

"Yes, haven't you ever swam in the rain before? The water is usually warm." She stood and grabbed Xena's hand, pulling her up. "Come on." She pulled Xena away.

Two soaking figures walked into the tree.

"Sorry, I guess this is one of those times when its not."

"You said it would be warm Gabrielle."

"I said usually. You didn't have to go." She tried backing away. It didn't work. She backed up right against the side of the bark. "You wouldn't hurt little ol me would you?"

"I would." She smiled. Her hands raised high, taking place along Gabrielle's arms and raising them above her head. "Now. Let me get even." She slowly trailed her tongue along Gabrielle's upper lip. "I'm sure I can think of a few ways to torture you." She took possession of her mouth and slid her tongue through, tracing the contours of Gabrielle's mouth. "Mmm. Not quite torture yet." She looked at Gabrielle. "What do you say?"

Gabrielle pulled her arm from Xena's grasp and pulled Xena's lips toward her own.

Xena pulled back and let go of Gabrielle. She yawned. "Boy, I'm beat, I'm getting some sleep."  She laid down on her bedroll and closed her eyes.

Gabrielle shook her head and whispered. "Oh no warrior. You are not done yet." She slid off her shift and pulled open the covers, to crawl in. "Now, lets start that torture."

Xena laughed as she threw her shift out. "Its only fair."
