Part 3

Camille pulled in the massive parking lots next to the Mulaberry College Technology department building. Driving along the sidewalk until she spotted Robyn sitting on a green bench at the far end of the building’s corner, waiting for Camille to pick her up. Immediately after spotting the red eclipse slowly making it’s way to her, she stood up and closed her leather briefcase.

“Hey there stranger.” Robyn let herself in the car. Immediately she was met by a pair of soft lips pressing against her own. She returned the kiss and then, oxygen became an issue and they broke apart, breathing heavily. Robyn threw the briefcase in the backseat and Camille pulled the car into drive and they headed off to somewhere for lunch.

“So…how was work?” Camille asked. She stopped at a red light and Robyn had her hands dangling outside the window. It was a sunny day and she fancied a nice cool breeze on her hot skin. “Oh, it was fine. I lectured on the iambic poetry style that Shakespeare used and discussed the three different rhythms of iambic. Very tiring it was…”

“Oh. You know I saw one of his plays once in a Victorian theatre back when he was alive.” Camille said. “It was…unlike the movies we have now.”

“Really…interesting. I feel jealous that you got to live all these times to see all these stuff I’ve always wanted to see…”

“Well I did plenty of things you would wish you never even bothered to live that long.” Camille said rather darkly. Robyn sensed tension again and she changed the subject quickly. “So…what you do today?”

“Just…hung around.” She replied. They pulled at a fast food drive thru of the Potbelly Sandwiches. Robyn ordered a roast beef with cheddar and a Sierra Mist. Camille ordered her favorite supreme meat lover’s sandwich and Dr.Pepper.

Then they drove to a local park, called Angel’s Peak. It overlooked the peaceful Angel River and Crestfallen Lake. It was a beautiful park for it was beautifully done and a long pavement was built for anyone who wanted to take a walk in the scenic park. Flowers and trees were put in strategically marked places. A wooden bench near the cliff that overlooked the Angel River going into the Crestfallen Lake was where they parked near and decided to eat.

“Oh wow…it’s beautiful.” Robyn gasped at the view. Camille nodded in agreement, “Yeah…it sure is.” But she was looking at Robyn instead. They pulled out their sandwiches and sat on the bench, eating in peace. Camille had one arm draped around Robyn’s and soon they were cuddling on the bench. Robyn was still drinking her Sierra Mist while Camille was all finished eating. They were both cuddling closely as Robyn was leaning and her head rested on Camille’s right shoulder and Camille was resting her head on top of Robyn’s head.

     “…So…?” Robyn said. “Nothing new?”

“Uh, not that I know of.” Camille scratched a fake itch on her head. “Was there something you wanted to know?”

“Oh…uh, no not really.” Robyn lied. She didn’t feel like this was the time to bring it up and she was 100 percent sure that Camille wouldn’t talk about it.

“Oh come on…I know you’re lying…” Camille persisted. “It’s not nice to lie, y’know?”

“No forget it ok?” Robyn said with a final tone. She wasn’t going to bother this perfect beautiful moment. This was a time of bonding and peace. Her life was complicated enough and this didn’t really happen often. When you get older, and have a job and a relationship, things get very heretic and you have less time for fun and pleasant things that you begin to appreciate what little quality time you can get.

“…All right.” Camille backed off. “Just…you know you can talk to me about anything, right?”

“Of course.” Robyn assured her. “Don’t worry.”

“Ok good. Because I’m not going to let anything spoil this moment…”

        “Huh? What’re you talkin’ about?”

“This.” Camille reached in her pocket. She pulled out a small jewelry case and very slowly she opened the case, revealing the contents to an astonished Robyn. Inside was a ring, silver one and it had carvings of two hearts intertwined as one.

         “…Oh my god…this is beautiful…”

Camille smiled and slowly she placed the ring on Robyn’s finger. Then she brought out her right hand and showed Robyn a silver ring that was there. It happened to have the very same designs on it, only on the back there was a word; Love. Robyn’s ring read: Forever, on the back of hers.

“I j-just thought we should have something to symbolize us.” Camille explained. “See…those words on the back is actually a phrase. You got one half of it, I got the other.”

“Camille…I like it. Thank you…”Robyn said sincerely, tears of joy beginning to form. “…I love you.”

“I love you, Robyn.” Camille replied back with all of her heart. “From the bottom of my heart, if I still have one…”

“Oh you do, you dummy! Of course you got a heart.” Robyn laughed. “Oh god, I don’t know how to thank you back for this…”

Camille pretended to ponder over this. “Hmm…” She smiled at last, she already knew the answer but…she just wanted to make Robyn wait. The drama was too great for her…and she enjoyed every last drop of it.

“Well?” Robyn asked patiently. Camille turned to gaze into the emerald eyes of the other with her own blue eyes. “Well…you could…thank me…like this.” She reached to pull back the blonde hair of Robyn and then she lowered her lips to meet Robyn’s. Robyn of course, expected this and she welcomed the hungry lips and she kissed back with all of her soul into it. She felt Camille’s tongue make its way into hers and she welcomed this and allowed her own to go into Camille’s. Tongues explored each other as they deepened the kiss. Robyn slowly moved her body from being next to Camille, to being in front of her. Soon enough Camille was sitting forward and Robyn was sitting on her lap, and they were still locked in a passionate kiss that seemed to go on forever. “Oh…god, Camille…” She moaned softly as Camille’s hand went down her arm…creating a sensual feeling. She just continued to kiss Robyn and then soon they just stopped. Breathing heavily Robyn leaned her head on Camille’s own and they laughed. Camille was panting heavily out of breath, “Robyn…heh…”

Robyn closed her eyes for a moment; she was still in lack of oxygen. Then she opened them and was looking past Camille’s head and in her shock, she thought she saw a child staring straight at THEM! The child had a face contorted in hatred, while Robyn adopted a look of horror. “You…” It growled.

Camille had noticed the change in Robyn’s breathing pattern and noticed that Robyn was being all tensed up. Robyn slowly backed off Camille and Camille did not miss the expression on her face. “What’s wrong?” She jerked her head around to look at whatever Robyn was looking at. Nothing, but the red Eclipse, which was just parked a few feet from them. Then she turned her gaze back to her lover.  Standing up, she asked, “What’s wrong? Who did you see?”

“…I think I’m going insane…” Robyn blinked, the kid had vanished. Was it just a piece of her imagination? Or was it a kind of trick on her eyes? Camille was staring at her intently, searching for any sign. “...I’m sure you’re still sane.” Camille raised an eyebrow. “What is it?” She said again, softly. Robyn still kept her gaze at where she had thought she saw the kid, “…I don’t know.” She said finally.

They stood there in silence. Camille finally broke the silence, “…come here.” And they embraced in a tight hug. “Whatever spooked you, don’t worry about it. I’ll be here…” That was a promise Camille intended to keep, no matter what. Be there always for Robyn. No matter what happened at all.

“Camille?” Robyn turned down the radio in the car. They were heading to Isolation, since it was about 5:00 p.m. and Camille had to work soon. Robyn supposed she could use some drinks and whatever.

“Yeah?” Camille looked at her, as she had stopped at yet another red stop. What is it with red lights and me? Is it just me or do I seem to catch a lot of red lights?

      “…Back there I thought I saw a kid….”

SCREECHH!

A black Explorer and some other SUV severed to their right to avoid a collision with the Red Eclipse.

“!!! WATCH WHERE YOU’RE GOIN’ BITCH!”

“AARGHH! DAMNIT…GET OUTTA THE WAY FREAK!”

Camille had finally pulled the brake and they were on the side of the street, just before Isolation. What Robyn had just said completely caught her off guard and she hadn’t been prepared for that. “W-What did you say??” Camille turned to face Robyn.

   “Um…I saw a kid?”

“…a child? With black hair and brown eyes?”

   “I guess?”

“Oh no…so this must be their doing…geez.” Camille groaned out loud. Robyn raised her eyebrows in skepticism. Damn, Camille thought, so the kid she saw in front of the car earlier today wasn’t a part of her imagination…it was probably some kind of trick the Demon Hunters were trying to do. Problem was she didn’t know what they were trying to do. It just didn’t seem to make any sense…why bother to just send illusions of some kid just to look at her? Why not conjure some freak army to kill her and the rest of the demons in the country? It didn’t sound like their style…maybe this was the work of something else?

“I have no clue what in the world you’re talking about. Who’s doing what?” Robyn asked.

“…Demon Hunters. At least, that’s who I’m thinkin’ responsible.”

“And you think a mere illusion of a kid is what they sent after us to like…what? Spook us to death?”

“…Not funny, Robyn. I thought I saw a kid in front near the parking lots earlier this morning…”

   “All right…who are they?”

“…They’re the Ku Klu Klux s of Demons…only they go even farther back in time and farther in their hatred. They use a series of ancient techniques and summoning powers against us. They want to “cleanse” the world from scum like us. They kill even humans, whom they believe are not fit to exist. They hate all abnormities to the human race and only wish to have the world to contain only the humans they believe are the perfect superior humans. This is all I know from my million conflicts with them.”

“Oh…” Robyn said. “I see…you think this kid we saw may be connected to them?”

“I’m not so sure. This doesn’t seem like their style, but then who knows? Lately they’ve been on the rise and activity has increased. I think something’s going on…they wouldn’t dare to expose themselves like that…not without a powerful leader like Mortacaesar…”

   “Mortacaesar?”

“He was the ultimate leader back then. He was responsible for most of the demon and human massacres that ever happened in the ancient worlds. Mortacaesar, I doubt is his real name…he just likes to call himself the King of Humans.” Camille explained. “Anyway, I had a dozen run ins with him and I was the only army he could not defeat or land his hands on. He probably got upset so much he practically set his sole priority to be “KILL ALEX!” I seen him once, in a dying town…a town he saw unfit to exist. The villagers, he saw, were mostly friends with demons and so on, and even some of the children were half demons. There were many prostitutes and many strange things being practiced, and not to mention, members of the same sex actually took a sexual interest into themselves and others of the same sex. He hated all that and viewed this as an abnormality in humankind…”

“Oh gosh…he sounds like some kind of mentally insane freak…”

“Yeah…and what was ironic was that he himself was half demon…geez I don’t think whoever raised him demon or not demon must have done a good job. Probably was an anti-demon person…” Camille said.

  “…So…what’s going on?”

“No idea. He simply disappeared one day. Look, why don’t you leave all the worrying to me ok? I’m the one who’s in danger here and I’ll take care of myself…ok? I don’t want to endanger you because of me…” Camille said sternly to Robyn. “Don’t get yourself involved ok? It’s too dangerous…”

“Why not? I don’t want to lose you…I’ve gotta fight for you too!”

  “Look it’s not that I don’t appreciate you, it’s just that…you just aren’t uh,”

  “What? I’m not a demon…I’m not a fighter, I’m a weakling…so what?”

“No! Not that…well I don’t think you should get involved in dangerous things…like this. I don’t want to see you hurt…”

“So you’re saying I don’t know how to take care of myself? Geez, you people, you think you’re all that and mighty powerful huh? Guess again!” Robyn felt herself turn red. She was tired of this game and tired of how people always assumed she was incapable of fighting back. Hell, she knew Tae Kwon Do and was a black belt herself. She even knew fencing and some staff fighting. Geez, someone with her height should make up for what she lacked, in muscle. That is exactly what she just did; she took the self defense classes. So what if she was short and couldn’t intimidate anyone? She could just easily crush anyone in a few seconds if they just didn’t know any better. Yet here, her OWN lover was implying that she thought Robyn was HELPLESS…

“…That’s not what I meant.” Camille tried to say. “You’re…just well, uh…”

“…For your information, I have a black belt and I’m NOT helpless. Looks can be so deceiving y’know? You know…you really have a HUGE ego and just when I thought it couldn’t get any larger…” The instant these words left Robyn’s lips, regret filled her and she shut her mouth immediately. Camille wasn’t looking at her anymore but rather at the steering wheel. Then she removed the brake and they drove to the Isolation parking areas, not saying a word.

Robyn knew she shouldn’t have said those words, but it was just…so insulting to her that Camille would think she couldn’t handle anything. What the hell? She had gone through the Alex phrase and remained cool the entire time. She had even talked back a few times and braved these slaps she received in return. Talk about being tough! Sure she was shorter, way shorter than Camille, but that didn’t mean anything. What she lacked in, she made for in muscle and skill. She simply chose not to resort to that kind of thing, unless absolutely necessary. This was absolutely so darn fuckin’ crappy right now.

They left the car to enter the bar, and Robyn made her way to the empty stool in front of the counter. “The usual.”

A martini was poured soon enough and Robyn took in a long drink from the glass. Troy had just finished a conversation with some other demons and was now scanning the bar to make sure everything was fine.

“Hey Robyn…how’s things going?” He finally said to her. “Would you like another?”

“Sure. Just fine I guess, you?”

“Could be better I guess.” He scratched his neck. “So…how’s you and Camille goin’?”

“Bad. We just got into this argument. Goddamn it…is Camille supposed to be so full of herself about how mighty and powerful she is? She was all like high and godly and she implied that I was helpless!”

“Uh-uh…tell me about it.” He laughed. “Been like that all her life. I guess it’s the uh, pride in her I guess. She had been always one of the tough guys back then…hung ‘round with the bad guys and so on…”

“…Y’know it’d be very helpful if she just stopped thinking me of as her precious little glass that could be broken easily…but more of her equal…”

“Uh-uh…that’s Camille for you. She hates feeling weak and helpless. She likes feeling strong and useful. She’s very proud of herself…but I dunno, I think she likes protecting you.”

“I know…well I don’t have any problem with it but it’s just well…I DON’T like being treated like an invalid. I deserve to know things and she shouldn’t be keeping anything from me. I’ve gotten a dozen feelings that she’s keeping something back on purpose…not to involve me into something more terrible or may cause problems…but that’s life you know? When you choose to be with someone, you commit yourself to be with and be an equal to that person. How am I supposed to help or aid her if she won’t let me?”

“I don’t know. It’s just how she’s always been. But I can see it in her actions the way she looks at you, it’s definitely true love. She loves you…and that’s something I’ve never really seen that often from her. You should feel honored.”

“I am…” She said quietly. “Of course I know I should be happy…”

     “There you go.”

“Eh well…but don’t you understand the concepts of being with someone? To be with someone, you must be there always for that person…share secrets and help each other…that kind of crap?”

“Oh I completely understand. But the problem here is that you’re dealing with Camille here… and she has surely never been one to do this kind of stuff. I solely believe she shares more things with you than she does to others, but still she can be a real hard headed idiot.” He laughed a little. “Here…take another shot and it’s on the house.” He poured another martini for Robyn.

Robyn stared at the martini before her. Damn that Camille…

“Hi!” A voice said cheerfully. Robyn turned to face the direction of where the voice spoke out. A well built man with blonde spiky hair came to sit next to her. He turned his brown eyes to Robyn’s green emerald eyes and he smiled, “I’m Brian James. You can call me B.J.”

“Uh, hey B.J…” She nervously smiled back. “I’m…Robyn. Nice to meet you.”

“The pleasure’s mine…” He raised his hand and Troy came over. Troy glared at B.J with a suspicious look as he poured a glass of whiskey. B.J took the glass and took a long drink from it.

“So…Robyn…what you do?” He asked. Robyn took another drink from her glass. She averted her gaze back to her martini and responded, “I’m a professor…”

         “Interesting. What do you teach?”

         “English Literature.”

“…Heh, English. My favorite language…” He laughed. “Well…I’m a worker for the business my family’s involved in.”

“Oh. Cool…hey, excuse me will you? I need to go to the bathroom.” Robyn excused herself. He stood up, “…what’s the matter was it something I said?”

“No B.J …I just need to use the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”

He shrugged and walked over to a group of people and started talking to them. He looked at Robyn one final time and then he started to get into some kind of deep conversation with one of the demons about something.

Robyn made her way to the bathroom in the little hall, away from the rest of the bar. It was pretty narrow and smelled strongly of vomit and cigarette smoke. Then she came to a door marked with a sign “WOMAN” on it and entered. She faced herself in the mirror and sighed audibly; she was tired right now and wished she was at home right now, sleeping in her cozy bed. She flattened her hair once again and spread some lip balm on her lips to keep it soft. Washing her hands, she dried them off on a roll of towel that was hanging beside the sinks, she was about to leave the bathrooms when a bang was heard. Whirling around, she saw nothing but the stalls of the toilets. They were all in fact, empty. Confused, she looked around once again and nothing seemed to have caused that sound at all. Then she looked at the mirror and instantly, her eyes went white.

A girl, with long black hair and tan skin was staring furiously at her. Her eyes were brown, but they had turned blood red and it seemed like flames were surrounding her. Robyn whirled around and nothing was there…then she jerked her face to the mirror and saw nothing but herself. Breathing heavily, she tried to make out what the hell happened in her head. What the hell was that? A girl looking at her as if it wanted to kill her. It seemed like no one was around at all and she couldn’t see any reason for anyone to go after her. Unless the Demon Hunters knew about her and her relationship, she was supposed to be off the hook… or so as she thought. That was only if Camille was right about the Demon Hunters…

But she wasn’t going to trouble Camille any farther. She wasn’t going to sit back and take the crap from Camille anymore. No, she’d show that she could HANDLE it. Yep, everything was cool. She didn’t need to concern Camille with any more of the foolishness of seeing things. Camille didn’t need to worry about crap and Robyn especially didn’t need to go through hearing how Camille would start implying that Robyn was weak.

Hurrying out the bathroom she walked straight back to the bar area. B.J was nowhere to be in sight and she walked back to where she was sitting before. The martini was gone; Troy must have taken it thinking it was done. There still was no sign of Camille anywhere in the bar and Robyn desperately wanted to go home. Camille was the one who HAD the damn keys to her car. Scanning the room once again for any signs of Camille, she failed to find her and then she asked Troy if he had seen her anywhere. He shook his head, “Last I seen her, she was outside smoking and taking out some garbage. But that was hours ago…”

“…can I have Vodka Blues?” She asked. He nodded, “Sure.” As he poured her a larger glass of some vodka, she then noticed the band who was playing at the bar was none other than Candy and her band of Amazons. They were playing a piece called, “Dealin’ with the Devil” and that was one of Camille’s favorites. She took a long drink from her glass, feeling the taste of the vodka going down her throat to her stomach. Then she got up, and walked to the back of the building, hoping to find Camille and the keys so she could get home. To no luck she didn’t find her, anywhere. “Goddamn it, where are you?” She mumbled out loud, partially drunk. She found herself now outside the bar, in the back where the garbage were and still nothing there. It was just an alley and some stray cats were running around chasing some dust balls. She was feeling a bit annoyed and tiresome; the vodka felt like it was burning in her stomach…Where the hell was Camille?

She walked around the building and came into the parking lots. Noticing the car wasn’t there anymore from where she last remembered it was left. “…She left me here…” Robyn could feel her anger grow. The vodka was now making her feel a bit woozy but she convinced herself that she was fine. “So you wanna play games with me huh? Fine whatever, I’LL walk home…” She shouted out loud to no one in particular. The walk home from Isolation to the road where she lived was approximately a few miles away and it was midnight.

The moon was high in the air and it shone brightly on Robyn’s figure. The streets were mostly quiet with some occasional truckers passing by and most stores were darkened. Some 24 hours stores were open but barely anyone was inside shopping at all. She walked down the pavement in the cold night, with only a thin piece of sweatshirt jacket she had brought along. Damn…it was cold in the night, not to mention it was freezing. No comfort came from the nearby lights for they were too far away from her to radiate their artifictional heat. She shuddered and continued quietly down the concrete sidewalk, still not any closer to her house. Damn the cold was slowing her down and she wished Camille didn’t leave her at Isolation. Fuck her, she thought bitterly. She’ll definitely pay for this…

Suddenly a car pulled next to her and she stopped. “Camille?” She couldn’t make out what kind of car it was.

The window rolled down and nope, it wasn’t Camille, but B.J. He called out, “Hey! Want a ride home? It’s mighty cold out here…”

“…Sure thanks.” The thought of being inside a nice cozy car was all that appealed to her cold, frozen brain. “Roanoke St. just about three miles away from this spot.”

“Got it.” He smiled at her. B.J cranked up the heat in his car and they sped down the dark highway. “So anyway, what’re you doing walking down the street like that? Its mighty cold you know…”

“Oh a friend abandoned me here…” She said. “Got in an argument and then we just came to Isolation and I find that she left me there too.”

“That sucks…” He shook his head in sympathy. “...Well, here we are, on Roanoke.”

“Thanks. Just drop me off at that big tan brick house there.”

“Sure.” He drove over to the brick house and parked on the driveway. Robyn saw that the Red Eclipse was already there in the driveway next to B.J’s car. So Camille had left her and come home after all…

“…Is there any way we can meet again? Or get in touch? I’d really like to get to know you…” He said. Robyn just smiled at him and she handed him a piece of paper, “My e-mail. We can chat sometimes for fun. Bye and thanks for the ride.”

Letting herself in the house, she found the house was completely dark and no source of light was on. She felt her way to the nearest light switch and flipped it on. As the lights came on, something in front of her was dangling. She screamed out, “AHH!” It was some gruesome lump of bloody flesh wriggling in front of it as if it was alive. She saw it had a heart beating and there were all kinds of organs showing in the thing. Slowly, it turned to face her and she saw a pair of black eyes glare at her and then…it seemed to be walking towards her threateningly. She backed away from the thing and accidentally stumbled down the stairs and tripped over something and fell on her butt. She closed her eyes instantly and slowly opened them, it wasn’t there anymore. She blinked and blinked. What the HELL was that? Why is that lately she’s been seeing things? Damn, it must be the vodka…she thought. All the more reason I need to sleep, she decided. Camille was still nowhere in sight and Robyn finally given up. The car was obviously here but Camille still wasn’t no where to be found. Making her way to the bedroom she changed into a pair of long loose plaid pants and a t-shirt and then she walked to the kitchen to grab something cold to drink.

“Who the hell was that guy? And why did you scream out like that?” Camille finally spoke from behind Robyn. Robyn jumped startled and turned to face her, “Camille…”

Camille had enough and after she did her jobs, she decided to get away from Isolation and to grab some fresh air. It was simply too much for her and she felt suffocated. She hated to argue with Robyn but it just seemed like it was supposed to happen. She hated doing anything that upset both of them. It just didn’t feel good at all. Then she headed home, knowing full well that Robyn would be very mad that she was left at the bar.

“…For your information, B.J drove me home, unlike you who abandoned me at the Isolation without a ride.” She snapped. “I had to walk a mile in the freezing night until B.J found me on the way…”

“…I didn’t intend to leave you there.”

“Whatever.” Robyn rolled her eyes. Camille clenched her jaws; she hadn’t purposely planned to abandon Robyn at the Isolation bar. It just happened and she was just going out to get some fresh air and some time to think.

“Look, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have left you there. I’m sorry, ok? Please…we need to talk…” Camille begged. “I really didn’t mean to. I just…needed some fresh air.”

“And you just decided to forget all about me…some person you are…I fuckin’ waited for you even though I was still mad at you…” Robyn drank down some chocolate milk. “Whatever, Camille…I’m gonna go to bed…I’m tired and so definitely not in the mood to talk to you at all.”

   “Wait…”

“Night, Camille.” Robyn said with a final tone. She turned and walked back into the bedroom and closed the door.

“Damn it!” Camille groaned in frustration. Picking up the glass that Robyn left on the counter, she slammed it in the wall, and the pieces of glass fell to the floor with a loud clatter. A dent now formed in where the glass hit it.

The bedroom door remained closed and no sound was heard. Camille fell to her knees and sighed heavily. She had made a mistake…a big mistake indeed.
