Working Class Hero
by Nyxie
Ah, Disclaimers:
Ya’ll know who they look like, but they belong to me, barring the car that I
stole from my friend.
Violence/Language:
I think I managed to keep this one with no bad language. Violence…spousal and
child abuse is mentioned. You’ve been warned.
Love/Sex:
Yes…love is present between two consenting adults who happen to be both
female. So if you live somewhere this isn’t allowed or you don’t like it go
find something general. If you’re under aged…I need ID. Fake is accepted,
but I did warn you!
Hurt/Comfort:
I dunno, maybe.
Thanks:
Nat, you’re a life saver! I dunno what I’d do w/out you. To my Beta Beck…
thanks a bunch.
Prologue:
So I guess I was never what anyone would consider a hero. Truthfully, I wasn’t much more than you’re average working class girl. I got up every morning, went to work, cooked all day, and partied all night. It’s not a lifestyle that fits all people, but it suited me just fine. How could it not? I was twenty-two, successful, and quite happy. Nothing lasts forever though; I always knew it would be a matter of time. One day it happened…he literally walked into my life and she followed him.
One: How They Met…
“Stop that, you’re gonna scare him.” Billie Jenson said without meaning. They were teasing the runner again.
“So? We didn’t scare you…we should have.” Brandy replied as he shrugged and flipped a burger.
“I’m not like everyone else. It takes more than a few horny perverts to scare me off…speaking of off, my shift is officially done.” Billie grinned as she pulled off her apron and threw it in the bin.
Charlie shook her head and smiled. She said, “Try showering before you go out to the bar tonight…and don’t get to sloshed to come to work in the morning. Big Christmas dinner…we need you.” She threw a small potato at Billie. She shook her head at the way her friend lived. She’d spend half of Christmas Eve at the bar, and the other half at home with her mother and brothers.
Billie caught the potato in one hand and hurled it back. She grinned, “I got off this week, Charlie. Doctor’s orders…I can’t be here…”
“Shit…guess the new girls are doing over time. Just remember you promised to manage the club next week…meaning you won’t be here another week.” Charlie pointed out and frowned.
“Christ…it’s connected to the Inn. I’ll be next door…later gals.” She said as she walked out of the kitchen. She made her way down the corridor to the main dining room and bumped into a small, running figure.
“Mommy!” the little boy squealed as he latched on to Billie’s legs.
Billie looked down, quite confused. The kid couldn’t have been more than two, three at most. She knelt down after prying the little arms from around her. “Where’s you’re daddy?” The little boy laughed and kissed her cheek. “Stop it… where’s your daddy?”
“Don’ got one…” the boy replied.
“Then who are you with?” Billie asked him.
He answered like this was something Billie should know, “Mama…”
“Well then, lets see if we can find her, shall we?” Billie asked as she scooped the boy up. She added, “I need you to point her out to me…”
“Okay…” the boy answered.

Carissa Hargrave was in a frenzy looking for her son. They were eating and he saw something and took off. She had her four-month-old daughter, Embry, asleep on her shoulder. She asked one of the waitresses, “Have you seen a little boy run past? Blonde hair, blue eyes?”
The waitress was about to answer when she heard her son, “Mama!
Carissa sighed; she was relived. “Nathan, I told you not to run off!” she scolded.
The boy, Nathan, frowned. “Mommy woke up for Christmas…see.” He wrapped his arms around Billie’s neck and rested his head on her shoulder.
“Baby, that’s not Mommy…” Carissa explained to her son.
He’d have none of it. “Yes…” he said as he began to sniffle.
Carissa looked at Billie, apologetically. She said, “Look, I’m really sorry about this. If you’d like to sit down I can explain everything.”
Billie nodded, “Sounds reasonable. By the way, I’m Billie Jenson…please call me Billie.” She followed Carissa to her table.
“Carissa Hargrave, you can call me Chris.” She replied as she shifted her sleeping cargo. She added, “You’ve already met Nate, and this is Embry.”
Billie looked over at the boy who was now happily playing with his trucks. She asked, “Could ya tell me why he thinks I’m his mother?” she asked.
Chris nodded. “That. Well, you look like my ex-girlfriend, Grace. Ok, so you’re almost a replica and he asked Santa for Grace to wake up for Christmas and he saw you…”
Billie nodded, “And he thought I was her?”
“Yah…I mean, I’m not sure how to explain to a two year old that Mommy’s dead. If he thinks she’s alive I’m gonna have a hell of a time explaining why she’s not with us.” Chris started rambling. She thought, “Thank God, she’s not with us…”
“Maybe I can help ya there. I mean if you’d like me too…I mean…” Billie sighed. She wanted to help; she just didn’t know how she could. “Look…I have family, but they don’t expect me home ‘til like two or three in the morning…” Billie began as she looked at Nate.
“Would you?” Chris asked. She knew where Billie was going.
Billie smiled and nodded, “Where do you live? I can meet you there…”
“301 Sixth Street…we walked, so you’ll be there first.” Chris said.
“Well you’re not walking back…it’s snowing like a bit…badly.” Billie caught herself before she let loose in front of a toddler.
“Busted, Ms. Jenson…thank you.” Chris said.
****
“Cold out there.” Billie commented as she set Nate on the floor. He ran off, instantly to play with his toys. Embry woke up on the way home was sitting happily in her pen.
Chris smiled, “Can I get you anything to drink?”
“Got any beer?” Billie asked with a sly grin. She sat down on the couch and looked around the room. There were a lot of pictures, all of the kids and Chris.
“Yah…Bud okay?” Chris asked as she pulled two out of the fridge and came back into the room. She sat down at the other end of the couch.
“Bud’s fine…” Billie replied as she reached out for the beer.
“Nahhh…” Chris said. She pulled the bottle back, “How old are you?” she asked.
Billie grinned, “Would you believe nineteen?”
“No…”
“Good…I’m twenty-two.” Billie asked, “How old are you?”
Chris handed her the beer and opened her’s. She replied, “Twenty six. Single?”
Billie took a pull of her beer and replied, “Very. You?”
Chris laughed, “Taken by
Embry and Nate…no-one wants an instant family.” She curled her feet
underneath her and smiled wistfully. She thought, “Wish someone did…”
“I wouldn’t say that, I
mean I’m here, aren’t I?” Billie smiled at her and thought, “I
got no idea why I’m here…could be getting smashed somewhere…”
Nate came running into the room, “Sana’s comin’ t’night!” He jumped on the couch and kissed Chris and Billie on their cheeks. He jumped off and ran out of the room again.
“How old?” Billie asked as she sipped some more of her drink.
“Nate’s two and Embry’s four months.” Chris replied.
Billie nodded and looked at the little girl in the pen. She asked, “You must have loved your ex…to have her kids an’ all…”
Chris smiled and thought, “If you only knew how far from the truth that was…” She replied, “It’s a long story…I wouldn’t want to bore you.”
“Naw…I got time if you’d like to talk…” Billie offered as she set down her empty bottle.
Chris half smiled, “She beat me all the time. She beat Nathan once when I wasn’t home, and after that we left and she killed herself. She wasn’t loving or caring, just cold and hurtful…” Chris summarized as a tear rolled down her cheek.
Billie frowned and moved closer to Chris. She put an arm around her and said, “Sorry I asked, it’s not my business, really.”
Chris leaned her head against Billie and said, “No…I never talked about it, and it’s about time, I guess. It’s just hard, ya know? I teach all day, daycare is expensive, and I have no help…you think they’d give us more than two days for Christmas holiday.” She shook her head.
“Yah, I know…” Billie thought a moment and had an idea. She wasn’t really big on kids, charity or people, but something about Chris just made her want to help out in some way. She finished, “I’m off this week, and I usually work evenings. I can stay with your kids while you work if you’d like; sort of a baby-sitter.”
Chris didn’t believe someone was being this kind to her. It never happened…ever. She smiled, “You’d do that? I mean wouldn’t it be a hassle coming back and forth from here to work to your house every day?”
“No…considering I still live with my mother, and I’m never home anyway.” It was the truth…Billie looked at her watch, “We’ve been sitting here for two hours…”
“Eight o’clock. Time for little children to go to sleep…be right back.” She said as she got off the sofa and picked up Embry.
Billie offered, “I can take care of her, if ya like.”
Chris nodded, “Alright…bottles are in the fridge, microwave it for a minute and it’ll be fine. Could ya do one with milk for Nate, and can you change a diaper?” She asked.
“I have two nieces and a nephew…of course I can!” Billie laughed as she took Embry in her arms.
****
Billie was asleep on Chris’s couch. It was eleven o’clock and getting later. Chris sat on the edge of the sofa and shook her gently, “Billie…you got a phone number?” she asked.
Billie mumbled, “908-6788…don’ tellem where Iam…”
Chris shook her head and dialed the number. She waited for the phone to pick up.
“Hello?”
“Can I speak to Mr. or Mrs. Jenson?” Chris asked.
“This is Mrs. Jenson, who’s calling?”
“This is Chris Hargrave, a friend of Billie’s…she’s asleep on my couch at the moment, and I can’t get her up…I just wanted to let you know she’s alright.”
Mrs. Jenson smiled on the other end of the line. “This is a first…thank you for calling. She’s spending Christmas with you?”
“She planned on going home and coming back tomorrow morning, but she fell asleep.”
“Well
if she’s there I’m sure it’s important. Thank you…”
“You're welcome.”
****
Nathan woke up; it was Christmas morning. He went flying through the halls and into the living room to see the presents. Grinning, he spotted Billie on the couch and he jumped on her. Billie woke up with a start, to find Nate on her belly. She smiled, “You know what time it is, little man?”
“No…” Nate replied.
She glanced at the VCR clock and told him, “It’s three in the morning…too early to be awake.”
“Sana’ came…” he pointed out as he rested his head on her shoulder. He yawned, “Wan’ some milk…”
Billie smiled and stood up slowly, as she wrapped her arms around the boy. She made her way to the kitchen and warmed up a bottle for Nate. She asked, “Ready to go back to sleep?”
Nate put the bottle in his mouth and said around it, “Wif’ you, Mommy.” He closed his eyes.
Billie nodded again and made her way back to the couch. She lay down, Nate still on her shoulder, and they both drifted back to sleep.
****
Chris woke up around six o’clock. She pulled on a pair of boxers and a sweatshirt; she went to the bathroom and brushed her teeth. Creeping through the hall, into the living room, she saw Nate sleeping on Billie’s shoulder. Billie smiled from the couch and said softly, “Hi…”
“Hi. I’m sorry you didn’t make it home last night. I didn’t mean to keep you here.” Chris replied as she made her way to the couch. She gently scooped up Nate and placed him on the smaller sofa. She came back and sat at the edge of the couch, “I didn’t ask you how much I’d owe you for baby-sitting…”
Billie sat up and leaned against the arm of the couch. She shook her head and replied, “Nothing…it’ll keep me out of trouble.”
“I can’t ask you to do it for free…” Chris started. She had to do something for her, if not salary, then something else.
“You didn’t ask me…I said I would. If you have to do something for me, then come with me to Christmas dinner today. Bring the kids and we can make a day out of it…I’ll call home.”
Chris agreed, “That sounds great, but it’s not enough…what about gas expenses?” she asked.
“If you want to do something for me, then you can give me the use of your couch…this way if I get really tierd I can sleep here, and not drive forty-five minutes home. It’s only ten minutes to your house…” Billie grinned, not thinking Chris would agree.
“How ‘bout I make up the spare bedroom for you, instead?” she suggested.
Billie arched an eyebrow, “Seriously?”
“Yah, seriously. You’ve done…you’re doing so much for me; it’s the least I can do. I wish I could do more.” Chris replied.
Billie smiled, genuinely smiled. She said, “Maybe you can…you could let me be your friend.”
“Only if you let me give you a hug…” Chris bargained. She was surprised when Billie didn’t answer; she simply pulled her into a hug. Chris returned it gratefully and thought, “Now this feels right…” She could have lost herself then and there.
Billie thought, “Definitely new…a hug with no promise of sex afterward.” She smiled as she placed a soft kiss on Chris’s cheek. She’d never just held someone for the sake of holding them before, and she was finding she quite liked it. “Ya wanna catch another few hours of sleep?” she asked as she stretched back out across the couch, Chris still in her arms.
“Yah…” Chris agreed as she went to go back to her room.
Billie didn’t let go. She asked, “Stay?” Chris nodded and lay down beside Billie. She rested her head on her shoulder and draped an arm across Billie’s chest. Billie’s arms tightened around Chris’s waist, as they fell asleep.
****
Billie and Chris pulled up in front of Billie’s house. On the ride over they explained to Nate that he should call Billie, “Billie.” He was agreeable. They took Billie’s car, and they decided Billie would go back home with Chris and the kids with a few changes of clothing. “Here we are.” She said.
Chris smiled; it was a small home, and looked comfortable. They got out of the car, a 1999 Mustang, and they each took a kid. Billie took Nate, upon his request, and Chris took Embry. They went to the house and Billie let them in. “Aunt Billie!” Two little twin girls and a little boy greeted them, followed by two big men and their wives.
“Hey guys…Chris these are my nieces and nephew, Jayne, Shelby, and Jackie.” She put Nate down to play, and lead Chris to the four men and women. “These are my brothers Lenny and Jack and their wives, Lisa and Mary. This is Chris, my friend.”
Lenny, Jack and Lisa hugged Billie and shook hands with Chris. Jack said, “It’s great to see ya! I mean we only live in the same house and all…”
Lisa smiled, “Yah, really. We missed you. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Chris.”
Lenny agreed, “Yah, the girls were all excited to see you. Who’s the little ones?” he asked as he held out his arms for Embry. Chris handed him the baby and he smiled.
“The boy is Nate and that’s Embry. They’re Chris’s kids…where’s mom?” Billie asked.
“Kitchen.” Lenny, Lisa and Jack all said at the same time.
Billie smiled and asked Chris, “You mind if I take off for a minute?”
“Not at all.” Chris said. As Billie left the room, trailed by Nate, Lisa swept Chris to the couch in a conversation.
****
Billie picked up Nate and put him on her shoulders. They went into the kitchen and Mom smiled. She came over and hugged Billie. Billie hugged her, and then balanced Nate on her hip. “Sorry about last night Mom, it’s a long story.”
“It’s alright…your friend called. I figured it was important, now who’s this?” she asked.
“This is Nate, Chris’s son.” Billie replied as she kissed Nate’s cheek. He rested his head on Billie’s shoulder. Billie asked him, “Can you say hi to Mom?”
“Hi…” he smiled.
Mom laughed, “I’d like to meet this, Chris…Mary didn’t give you any trouble did she?” They left the kitchen and went to the living room. Nate went to play with the other kids.
“No. She just avoided us.” Billie said. Mary was raised strict Catholic and didn’t approve of such things.
Mom nodded and went over to Chris and Lisa. She said, “You must be Chris?”
Chris smiled at the older woman and shifted Embry on her lap. She said, “Yes, and this is my daughter, Embry. Nice to meet you.”
“You too. You can call me Mom. Everyone else seems to, anyway. How long have you and Billie been together?” she asked.
Lenny rolled his eyes, “So much for tact, Mom!”
Chris couldn’t answer so Billie stepped in. She explained, “We’re not together, we’re friends. I’m helping Chris out with the kids and I’ll be staying with her for a few days of the week is all.”
Chris thought, “Well that clears one thing up. She’s gay…” She added, “I’m grateful…thank you for having us.”
Mom laughed, “Stop by anytime. If you ever need a sitter, please drop the kids off anytime. I love them all…” She happily returned to the kitchen.
“That’s my mom…” Billie said as she sat down next to Chris. Lisa stood up and went over to talk to Lenny.
“I can see that. She’s very…sweet.” Chris offered.
“Try ruthless.” Billie laughed as she put her arm around Chris’s shoulder.
Jackie came up and climbed into Billie’s lap. Shelby and Jayne, who sat on Chris’s lap and to the side, followed him. Nate climbed up and took Billie’s other knee. Jackie told Chris, “Santa brang me a football, so Aunt Billie can teach me ta play…”
“Really?” Chris asked. She received a dirty look from Mary, who didn’t approve of her daughters being so close to the two women.
“Yah…she said she would.” The four-year-old boy stated.
Shelby and Jayne asked, “Wanna play with our dolls, with us?” At six they figured everyone would want to play dolls.
“Sure…Billie, will you take Embry?” Chris said. Billie nodded and made room for the baby girl. Chris was lead away by either hand, by the two girls.
****
Billie and Chris got home and tucked the kids into bed. Billie put her bag down by the couch, where she’d spend one more night and Chris sat down with a sigh. “They all seem nice, but Mary doesn’t seem to like us very much.”
Billie smiled and sat down. Chris lay down and put her head in Billie’s lap while Billie explained, “She doesn’t exactly think that two women or men should be in love…that’s all. She won’t say anything though, because Lenny gets upset.”
“But we’re just friends…she knows that.” Chris replied as Billie ran her fingers through her hair.
“We could be more, Chris. If you wanted to be…” Billie said softly. She smiled and traced Chris’s eyebrow with her thumb.
“We could be…I’d like that, Billie. I just…I…what if you…or…” Chris was afraid. She didn’t want this to turn out like Grace had. She didn’t know what to make of anything at the moment.
Billie reassured her, “We can take this slowly, Chris. No one is saying I have to move all my things here, or we have to jump into bed tonight…we have time. We can move at your pace if that’s what you want.”
“I’d like that, Billie. We can jump into bed tonight…I’d just like you there to hold me, if that’s alright?” Chris asked, timidly.
“I can be there to hold you…I can be there for anything you want me to be there for.” Billie said as Chris stood up.
They made their way to the bedroom and changed into their pajamas. Chris climbed into bed, and Billie slid in behind her. She wrapped her arms around Chris and kissed her cheek. Chris said, “G’night.”
“G’night…” Billie echoed.
Two:
How They Love…
Sometime In June…
“I wanna go to the club, Chrissy…” Billie said as she pouted at her lover.
“Where at?” Chris asked as she pulled Billie close to her.
Billie smiled and kissed the tip of Chris’s nose. She replied, “Peaches N’ Cream…the club next to the restaurant.”
“Sounds good, hon, what about the kids?” Chris inquired as she let go of Billie. She went and started throwing toys in the playpen.
“Mom…I already called her this morning. I dropped them off with a change of clothes and such. Our first night with no kids…” Billie said with a grin. She was looking forward to spending some down time with Chris.
“I can do that, Billie. We’ll go clubbing tonight…” She walked over to Billie and placed a gentle kiss on her mouth.
Billie returned the kiss and pulled back, “Let’s get ready?”
“Yah…lets…” Chris agreed.
****
Chris and Billie walked into the club and made their way to a table. Billie asked, “What do you want to drink?”
“Sea Breeze?” Chris asked.
“No problem.” Billie said as she went to get their drinks. As she placed her order, a woman from her past approached her.
“Billie…it’s been so long! Where have you been?” Sherri asked.
“With my family…” Billie grumbled her reply as she picked up the two drinks. “Thanks T…on my tab.”
“On the house, Billie-girl.” T replied.
Billie nodded and headed toward her table; Sherri followed at her heels. She asked, “Your family?”
Billie slid in beside Chris and handed her the drink. She addressed Sherri, “Yah, my family. My girlfriend, Chris and our kids.”
“Kids? Billie you settled down? God I miss those wild nights…” Sherri prattled.
Chris frowned at the woman; she smiled inwardly. She noticed Billie said “our kids.”
Billie answered, “Well some things are worth settling down for…excuse us…” She effectively dismissed Sherri. With that Sherri was walking in the opposite direction mumbling.
“Sorry, Chrissy…”
“You said ‘our kids,’ Billie.” Chris pointed out.
Billie looked confused, “I’m sorry it’s just that I…well…forget that they’re…”
Chris put a finger to Billie’s lips. She said, “Thank you…I was always afraid that you wouldn’t accept them.”
“I love them, Chris and I love…”
Billie was cut off by a tall red-head, “Billie! Oh my God, it’s been months since I’ve seen you! How are you?”
Billie smiled, “Fine, Bernie and you?”
“Great now! So, who ya picking up tonight?” Bernie asked as she leaned across the table.
Chris asserted, “My name is Chris and I’m her girlfriend. If she’s picking anyone up, she’s in trouble!”
Billie started laughing. She agreed, “Damn right, Bernie. But, I wouldn’t be picking anyone up, because I have everything I have ever needed right here…can you excuse us?” she asked.
Bernie smiled and nodded, “Good to see ya again, Billie. I’m glad you’re happy.” She walked off.
Chris asked, “Dance with me?”
Billie stood up and offered Chris a hand. They made their way to the dance floor; an old song by Queen was playing. “Fun It…” It was of the Disco and Funk genre. A brunette approached, “Mind if I cut in?”
Chris said, “No…” Billie said, “Yes…”
They looked at each other. Chris said, “Yes…” Billie said, “No.”
Billie frowned, “Why don’t we just go home?”
“If you want to, Billie.”
****
Billie and Chris stepped into the house. Billie looked over and said, “I didn’t take you there so you could meet half of the women I’ve been with…I’m sorry.” She pulled Chris close to her and rested her cheek on the side of Chris’s head.
“I know…I was jealous in there, Billie.” Chris admitted. Her head rested on Billie’s shoulder.
“Chris…look into my eyes and you’ll see that you’re the only one I’ll ever want. You don’t have to be jealous…” Billie told her as they headed toward their room.
Chris sat down on the bed, and Billie kneeled between her legs. Chris asked, “Really?”
“Yes…there’s nothing I wouldn’t do to let you know how I feel. If I had to go to hell and back just to tell you I love you, I would.” Billie explained. She was quite good with words; she just never found a need to use them.
“You love me, Billie?” Chris asked; she couldn’t belive she was hearing those words.
“I love you with all of my heart, Chrissy.” Billie said as she stood up and sat next to Chris. Their lips met in a kiss like no other they’d ever shared. Billie’s tongue brushed across Chris’s lips; her mouth opened. It was amazing for Chris, that someone could love her like this.
Chris pulled back, “You never kissed me like that before.”
“I never said I love you before either…not to anyone. I love you…” Billie repeated.
“I love you too…” Chris replied as she adjusted her position. She pushed Billie back and covered her body with her own. She repeated, “I want to spend the rest of my life showing you…”
Billie slid her hands under Chris’s shirt and let them trail down her back. She whispered, “Then show me, Chris…” Chris pushed Billie’s shirt up and pulled it off of her. Slowly, she unclasped her bra and stripped it off of her lover. Billie slowly unbuttoned Chris’s shirt and pushed it off her shoulders; she smiled. “No bra?” she asked, “I thought you were a good girl?”
“Good or not, I’m your girl…” Chris said as she lowered her lips to Billie’s. Her fingers dragged lightly over Billie’s nipples. She felt them stiffen; Billie moaned as she pulled Chris closer to her. “No…I’m showing you…” Chris said as she backed down Billie’s body. Slowly she unbuttoned and unzipped Billie’s jeans; she slid them down slowly, taking her underwear with them. Billie propped herself up and watched at Chris slowly slid her own pants off. Chris slid her hands over her body, stopping on her breast.
A smile crept onto Billie’s face. She dropped to the floor, onto her knees; she made her way over to Chris and placed her hands on her hips. Slowly, she turned her around and pushed her backward onto the bed. Gently kissing Chris’s chest she whispered, “No…I need you, Chrissy.” She trailed soft kisses down her torso and stopped at her hips. Her hands slid over Chris’s thighs, as the opened she kissed the inside of each one.
Chris moaned, “Billie…” She felt Billie doing things to her that she never thought she’d feel. Grace hadn’t been gentle; she’d been animalistic at best. Billie, in her opinion was the best thing to happen to her, along with her kids. Their kids…slowly, they were becoming a family. She felt Billie’s fingers slide into her and pick up a steady rhythm. “God, Billie…”
Billie smiled as her lips brushed against Chris’s clit. She felt Chris start to tense, and decided that she wanted to drag everything out. She changed her pace to nothing at all…She grinned as she heard Chris groan and arch her hips. She quickly picked up again and increased the pressure of her lips.
With in minutes Chris was completely overwhelmed; she cried out, “Billie…” It was a mixture of pain and pleasure. As she climaxed tears streamed down her cheeks. Shuddering from crying and having an orgasm, Chris was in emotional overload.
Billie crawled up beside her and leaned down, “Are you alright? I hurt you?”
Chris rolled over and practically leapt into Billie’s arms. She started sobbing into her lover’s shoulder; her arms were wrapped around Billie’s neck. She said, “I love you, Billie…don’t ever leave me, please?”
Billie’s arms encircled Chris. She said softly, “I’ll never leave, Chrissy. I want to be with you and Nathan and Embry and that’s all I want. I won’t hurt you…” She placed a chaste kiss on Chris’s lips.
“Promise?” Chris asked as her legs locked around Billie’s midsection.
“I swear, Chris. I will always be here for you…even in death I’ll never leave you.” Billie swore.
****
Billie’s eyes blinked open and closed. She was slightly bored at the moment; she’d been awake for the past two hours and a certain blonde wouldn’t let her move. Chris sighed and pressed herself into Billie. Billie smiled and decided it was time to wake her up. She brushed a few strands of hair from Chris’s eyes and shook her a bit; she said, “Come on, wake up…” Chris smiled in her sleep and rolled off of Billie; she curled up on the edge of the bed. Billie took her chance and crawled out of bed to brew some coffee, make Chris breakfast, and call to check on the kids.
****
Chris half opened her eyes. She remembered the night before and rolled over to find Billie wasn’t there. “It was just a really good dream.” she rolled over and sighed. The dream was very fresh in her mind. She thought again, “Well of corse it was a dream… she could never love me like that; no one has ever or will ever love me like that.” A tear rolled down her cheek as she sniffled. She started to sob and her body started to tremble.
****
Billie heard something upstairs. If she didn’t know better, she’d say someone was crying. She thought, “What the hell?” She started upstairs and went to the room she shared with Chris. She found Chris curled up sobbing: her heart broke at that moment. She slid into the bed and spooned herself behind Chris; she asked, “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Chris sniffled again, “Nothing…” She scooted back molding herself to fit Billie’s embrace.
“Somethings wrong, Chrissy, or you wouldn’t be crying…tell me?” Billie pleaded as sat up. She crawled around Chris and lay down facing her. She gently pressed her lips into Chris’s and held her close.
Chris looked into Billie’s eyes, and found nothing but pure love and concern. She conceded, “I had a dream…you said you loved me and you’d never leave me. Then, we made love and it was the sweetest thing I had ever felt. I woke up and realized it was nothing more than a dream…it hurts so much, Billie.” She reached out and ran her hand down Billie’s cheek.
Billie’s heart broke in two. She knew she should have been there when Chris woke up, but she wasn’t. She assured Chris, “Baby, that wasn’t a dream, it was last night. You’re right, it was the sweetest thing, and not only to you…I love you Chrissy. I should have been here when you woke up, but I went to make breakfast.”
“It wasn’t a dream?” Chris asked as she smiled through her tears.
“No…if you’ll notice we’re both still naked and we usually sleep in something.” Billie replied with a grin, as she ran her fingers through Chris’s hair. She whispered, “From now on anything that happens between us is real…”
Chris pressed her lips against Billie’s. As they met she whispered, “I love you…”
Billie smiled against her lips, “Love you too…” She held Chris close to her and finally they both knew they were home.
Epilogue:
If you asked Billie she’d say that
she’s nothing special. She’d tell you she was your average “working class
girl.” In a day we changed her life; she put it all on hold for my kids and
me. She taught me how to love again, and she gave my kids, our kids a chance at
a stable and happy life. She may never know how I truly feel and she may never believe
that she is, but to me she’ll always be my working class hero.
