Take care!
They had just made camp
for the night. Gabrielle was making stew over the fire while Xena gathered more
wood so they could keep the fire going all night. Even if it was in the middle
of the summer, it still felt a little chilly at night. After they had eaten, the
bard started writing in her scroll and Xena began sharpening her sword. They sat
quiet for a long time on each side of the sparkling fire. When Xena was finished
with her sword, she sat down and watched her writing fried from across the fire.
Gabrielle was laughing a little to herself as she was writing. But her thoughts
were cut off as she heard the warrior's voice. "Gabrielle, can I borrow a
pen and a scroll?" The bard looked at her friend with her eyes almost
popping out from her little blond head and her mouth wide open. "YOU want to borrow
a pen and a scroll?" "Yes please" the warrior answered in a
sweet and almost whispering voice.
Gabrielle shook her
head a little, while she started walking to the saddle bag, as if she was trying
to figure out if she really heard the question right. The bard got the things
and gave them to her warrior friend. Then she sat back down and continued
writing. She occasionally glanced up at Xena and saw the pen moving fast across
the scroll in front of her. 'What in the world could she be writing.' Gabrielle
looked back down at her scroll and kept writing. She glanced up at the writing
warrior a few times, the pen was still moving just as fast.
After about an hour, Gabrielle had finished her writing but Xena was just as
concentrated at what she was doing as she had from the moment she started.
"Can I look?" the bard asked as she got up and began walking towards
her friend. "Not yet. When I'm finished." Xena said and she
pressed the scroll against her chest so that the bard couldn't see what was on
it. "Okay." Was the blond woman's reply in a wondering voice as
she sat back down by the fire. The warrior continued. She looked up a
couple of times smiling and then turned her head back down to focus on the
scroll. Gabrielle poked with a stick at the fire as she impatiently waited.
After a time, what seemed like forever to the young bard, Xena stopped moving
her hand and said with a smile "There. Finished."
"Can I see it now?" Gabrielle asked as she jumped to her feet.
Xena rolled the scroll as it had been when she got it and reached it over to her
waiting friend. Gabrielle sat down by the warrior and unrolled the scroll fast
but at the same time carefully. Her eyes widened and her mouth dropped
open when she saw what was on the paper. "Oh.it's so beautiful."
She said as she looked at the drawing that the warrior had made of her. The
likeness was incredible. Xena had managed to catch every inch of Gabrielle's
face, you could even see the charisma glowing from the paper the same way
it did from the bard's beautiful face. "I didn't know you could draw."
The young blond said and looked up at the warrior and then back to the drawing.
"Well it's not something I do often. I have one I made of you last winter
so you can keep that one if you'd like."
"Can I see
it?" Gabrielle asked and looked up from the scroll. "Yes I have
it in my saddle bag. I'll get it." Xena got up to her feet and walked
over to where the saddlebag was. She picked up a piece of paper and walked back
to Gabrielle. Gabrielle looked at it and smiled. It was a drawing of a sleeping
bard, totally at peace with herself. Her eyes turned back to Xena again. "I
don't know what to say." Her eyes turned back to the drawing in her
hand and she continued "But why do you have a drawing of me in you saddle
bag?" The blond woman's hand gently crossed the paper. Xena carefully
caressed Gabrielle's cheek and gave her a nervous smile as she answered.
"So I can look at it when you aren't with me. That way you're always close
to me and I don't have to feel so alone."
Gabrielle could see
the unsecured expression on the warrior's face as if she was afraid for what the
response from her fried would be. So the bard leaned forward and gave Xena a
hug. When she let go, she looked in to the sky blue eyes in front of her,
silently seeking permission for what she was about to do. She could see that
Xena knew what was about to happen but she did nothing to stop it. No words were
exchanged as they slowly leaned towards each other, gently touching the lips in
front of them. They broke the kiss and looked deep in to each other's eyes. Sky
blue met emerald green. They slowly fell down on the bedroll by the fire and
continued what they just had started.
