Part 6 (Conclusion)

The Next Day...

Jo walked into the studio sporting a big grin.  Steven took one look at his sister, then shook his head.  She gave him her look of ‘what?’ and took the papers.  Entering the sound-proof booth, she took a few minutes to get settled.  Picking up the earphones, she motioned to Steve to begin.  The first song went well and she only had to redo a couple of parts.

During the second song her cell phone rang.  Cursing, she motioned to Steve to pause the tape.  Grabbing her phone, she flipped it open and answered.  “Yeah.”

“Oh hi.  Sorry to disturb you now.” came Emily’s voice.

“S’okay.  What’s up?” Jo loved hearing her voice.  A familiar warmth filled her body.

“I can’t make it to the studio today, got a meeting at the club.  I’m really sorry.” Emily apologized.  She felt bad that she couldn’t be there with her love.

“That’s alright.  We can get together later.”  Jo was disappointed, but tried not to let her voice show it.

“Okay.  I’ll call you when I get done.”

            “Okay. Bye hon.”

“Bye Sweetie.”  Hanging up the phone, she returned to her work.  A little disappointed that Emily wouldn’t be able to be there, she threw her sole attention to the recording.  She didn’t finish recording till late that evening.  Checking her voice mail, she found out that Emily wouldn’t be able to get together tonight after all.  She sighed and then proceeded to pack up her things and head home.

One Week Later...

Emily and Jo had been playing phone tag all week.  Every time one would get some free time the other had something come up.  It was more than a little frustrating for the two new lovers.  Tonight was a surprise.  Jo was off and Emily was performing at the club.  Jo decided to surprise her lover.

Stopping at the nearby flower shop, she got a dozen red roses and one white one.  Next she went to the grocery store and got chocolate ice cream, whip cream, and some maraschino cherries. Now to pick up her suit.  She went to Jocelyn’s and picked up the tuxedo.  Krystal teased her about the monkey suit and chatted with her for a little while till Jocelyn arrived home.  Krystal left the two and said her goodnights.

They all got dressed and left for the club.  Jo kept pulling at the coat and fidgeting in her nervousness.  Tonight was to be special.  Tonight she would tell Emily how she felt.

‘How I feel... which is... I love her.’  That realization had shocked Jo initially, but now it simply felt like heaven.  She had gone through love before and it had been a horrendous disaster.  She vowed never to allow anyone to get close to her again.  Now, however, she couldn’t even begin to think of her life without Emily in it.  The young woman had awakened something inside her.  She felt alive again.

Pulling up in front of the club, the pair got out and entered the club.  Moving to their usual booth, they ordered drinks and waited for the band to begin.  Jo nervously played with her drink, taking a sip every now and again.  Finally, Mystique took the stage.  Jo had purposely hidden herself just out of Emily’s line of sight.

The band finished its performance and left the stage.  Making her way to the booth, Emily failed to see Jo sitting in the shadows.  Jo stealthily snuck around behind her.  Taking her usual seat, Emily noticed the white rose on the table.  A small note accompanied the flower.  Picking it up she read:

A beautiful rose...

For an even more beautiful woman.

XX

Jo

A single tear slipped down her cheek and splashed against the table.  A tap on her shoulder startled her.  Turning around, she saw Jo.  Standing at her full height dressed in a black and green tux and holding a dozen red roses.  Jo handed the roses to Emily and then took her hand and kissed it.

Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes as she threw her arms around Jo’s neck and pulled her into a long deep kiss.  Breaking the kiss, Jo took the flowers and handed them to Erin.  Then she led her young love toward the stage and seated her at the front table.  Kissing her hand once more, she walked toward the stage.

Emily was puzzled as she watched Jo.  Climbing onto the stage, Jo took the mic.  Everyone in the club fell silent.  Sarah, Erin and Erika followed right behind her.  They started playing as Jo cleared her throat.  Turning to face Emily, she gazed into the green pools before her as she began:

A simple wish...

A hushed dream...

To love again... to live again...

I can see it in your eyes...

The love I’ve been searching for.

The words flowed over Emily, touched her heart and soul so deeply.  Tears flowed freely down her cheeks as she continued to gaze into the blue depths of Jo’s eyes.  Ending the song, Jo stepped off the stage and went to her love.

Looking into the green eyes that had captured her heart, she lowered her lips to kiss her love.  “That was beautiful.” Emily choked out.  Jo smiled.

“You ready to go.  I have a lot planned for us tonight.”  Emily nodded, not trusting her voice.  They said their good-byes and left the club.

Once outside, Emily noticed the limo and turned to Jo, surprise evident on her face.  Jo just grinned and told her to wait while she waved the driver over.  Just as Jo stepped onto the blacktop, Emily saw it: a red car swerving through the parking lot.  She tried to warn Jo, but it was to no avail.  “JO!!!” She screamed.  Jo turned.

Emily watched the horrible scene as if it happened in slow motion.  The red car sped up as it approached Jo.  She looked on in horror as she saw who was behind the wheel.  Her terrified scream of agony hit the air just as the car connected with Jo, throwing her.  The car sped off as she rushed to Jo’s side.

“Call an ambulance! Hurry!” she screamed at the limo driver, who had stepped out just as the car hit Jo.  Sarah, Erika, Jocelyn and Erin had all come out to the parking lot after hearing the scream.  Erin and Jocelyn rushed to the pair.  Erin trying to calm the distraught woman as Jocelyn attempted to survey the damage done to Jo.

Emily sat with Jo’ head cradled in her lap, stroking her hair and whispering to her, “Jo, it’s me.  You’re gonna be okay.  You’re gonna be okay.” she repeated the words over and over again both to try and reach the unconscious Jo and calm herself.  Jo was covered with blood and completely still.  Her breathing was very shallow.  The ambulance arrived within minutes and Jo was rushed to the hospital.

Erin and Jocelyn followed with a hysterical Emily, behind the vehicle.  Upon arrival at the hospital, Emily bolted from the car.  A nurse escorted Erin and Joce to the waiting area as Jo was rushed to surgery.  Several hours passed before the doctor came to inform them of Jo’s status. Erin held Emily and quietly rocked her.  Joce simply stared into the air.  ‘Come on my friend.  You finally found happiness don’t leave us.’  Joce pleaded.  In truth, she love Jo more than she would admit and seeing how happy Jo was after all this time made her feel warm inside.

The trio turned as the doctor entered the room.  “Ms. Knyte is in recovery now, but still unconscious.  She suffered several broken ribs, a broken leg and dislocated shoulder.  There was minimal internal bleeding and she should recover fully in the next couple of months.” He explained.

Emily held her tears in check and then requested to see Jo.  The doctor was hesitant as Jo was in ICU, but after Jocelyn informed him of his legal obligation, he relented and led Emily to Jo’s room.

Upon entering the room, Emily saw Jo... tubes and wires everywhere.  She immediately went to Jo’s side.  Taking Jo’s hand in hers she whispered to her slumbering lover.  “I’m here.  Please wake up.” she called, but no response came from Jo.  She pulled over a chair and rested her head on the bed’s side.

She quickly fell into a restless sleep.  Her mind drifted.  Images of the accident played over and over again.  She had almost lost Jo.  She knew she had to tell Jo how she felt.  She loved her with all her soul and couldn’t bear to think of life without her in it.  She didn’t know how long she had been asleep, but she was sure of what startled her out of Morpheus’ hold.  Looking down at Jo’s hand, she saw it: a slight witch of fingers.  Turning to look into her lover’s face.  “Come on honey. Wake up.  Jo...” she pleaded to her still silent lover.  Then it happened, one blue eye peered out from behind heavy lids.  “That’s it. You can do it.”

After struggling for a while, Jo’s eyes opened.  Blinking several times, she tried to bring her lover’s face into focus.  She tried in vain to raise her hand to touch Emily, but the pain proved too much for her. An anguished groan escaped her lips.  Looking up into moist green eyes, she tried to convey all she felt.

“Hey.  Careful there, you’re hurt pretty bad.” Emily said as tears began to fall.  Taking Jo’s hand she kissed it.  Emily failed to keep the emotion from her voice as she gazed into the blue eyes that had captured her heart and soul.

“Hey... don’t cry.” Jo croaked.  Emily couldn’t hold the tears at bay and continued to let the tears fall.  Her tears caused Jo to start crying as well.

“I thought I’d lost you.” Emily confided.

Jo struggled and finally replied, “I’m okay. We’re together.” she finally managed.

Emily could hold her emotions no longer and finally whispered, “I love you.”

Jo lay there as waves of joy coursed through her body.  Her eyes closed as she felt the peace she had lost so long ago return.  Opening her eyes again she captured green.  “I love you too.” Jo replied.  Emily fought the urge to throw her arms around Jo and hold her close and settled for resting her head atop Jo’s chest.  Jo couldn’t fight sleep anymore and so drifted off.

Two Weeks Later...

Emily waited in the office for the lawyer to finish going over the charges.  Erin had accompanied her friend and sat there trying to reassure her friend.  The lawyer returned and Emily signed her statement.  Taking the papers, the lawyer said she would call as soon as something developed.

Now it was time to pick up Jo.  She was to be released today and Emily promised to be there.  Agreeing to call Erin later and thanking her for coming along, she left the office.  She walked to her car and drove off.

Upon entering the hospital room, she found her lover already in the wheelchair waiting for her.  “Sorry I’m late hon.” she said as she bent to kiss her love.

Jo returned the kiss and then responded, “S’okay.  Let’s just get out of this place.”  Emily stepped behind her and grabbed her bag.  Following the nurse pushing Jo, they exited the hospital.

After getting Jo settled, she got in the car herself.  The two had agreed that Jo’s house would be their home for the time being.  Jo had decided that today she would ask Emily to stay forever.  She didn’t want to even consider life without her.  After losing Chris, then finding Emily, she knew that only with the guarantee of living together could she put to rest her doubts.

After helping Jo out of the car and into the house, she went to the kitchen and got them both some tea.  Joining Jo on the couch, she curled up next to her lover.  Jo’s arm reflexively wrapped around her pulling her close.  Emily snuggled deeper into the embrace and let out a contented sigh.  She was careful not to put too much pressure on Jo’s healing body.

“I have a question for you.” Jo began.  Emily rose up to look into Jo’s eyes.  Confusion and a hint of fear flickered in her green eyes.  Jo reached up and caressed her cheek to reassure her.  “I don’t need an answer right now, just think about it okay?” Emily nodded, still not entirely sure what was happening.  “I... I want...” Jo stuttered.

“It’s okay.  Whatever it is, we’ll face it together love.” Emily tried.

“I want you to stay here... forever.” Jo finally stated.  Now she sat waiting any response from Lisa.  Her heart was getting ready to attack her.  Emily sat there dumbfounded for a few moments before answering.

“Me? You want me to...”  She struggled to comprehend what was going on.  Jo nodded.

“I love you and don’t want to spend another day without you in it.” Jo whispered.

“Yes.” Emily answered.  Jo wrapped her arms around her love and pulled her into a deep kiss.  Breaking away gasping, the pair just stared at each other for a few moments.  Sheer unadulterated bliss.

Epilogue

It had now been nearly six months since the accident and Jo was preparing to go on tour to promote her new album.  Emily was busy making arrangements with Sarah and Erika about the group, as she would be traveling with Jo.  “Honey... Emily... you here?” Jo called as she walked in the house.

“In the living room.” Emily called and returned to her conversation.  “Yeah, that’ll be fine. No keep the schedule as is. Okay. Bye.” Hanging up the phone, she turned to welcome Jo home.  Wrapping her arms around the lean neck, she pulled Jo into a passionate kiss.

“Mmmm.  Now that’s a welcome home I really like.” Jo teased as the kiss ended.  “You all set?”

“Yep.  That was Sarah and the schedule has been adjusted.”  Emily replied.  All their things had been packed and were waiting by the door.  Taking a final mental inventory, she remembered something.  Running into the bedroom, she grabbed her notebook.  As she picked it up a slip of paper fell out.

Picking it up, she gasped and jumped back.  She tumbled over the edge of the bed and landed on the floor.  Jo, hearing the fall, rushed into the room.  Seeing Emily on the floor, she ran to her side.  “You okay?” she asked as she checked for injury.

“Yeah.  Just got startled that’s all.” Emily said and left the room.  Jo noticed the picture on the bed and picked it up.  Upon seeing what it was, she understood what had upset her love.  There, staring back at her from the paper, was their nemesis... Cole.  Jo turned and gathered her love into her arms and held her close.

The police had been unable to find her and the case was suspended.  Jo tore up the photo and threw it away as they left the house.  As soon as the door closed, the phone rang.  The answering machine picked up...

“Hello darlings... I’m back.” came the shrill voice of Colleen Callis. Cole.
