Part 3

Later that Day…

*ring *ring

“D’Amour Books, Sarah speaking, how may I help you?”

            “Sarah, it’s me.”

“Hey, one sec.”  Emily heard her yelling in the background before another voice came on the phone.

“Hey, I’m off in ten. I’ll meet you at the apartment.”  Erin said.

            “Okay, bye.”

“Bye.”  Emily hung up her cell phone and continued on to the apartment.  Parking in the garage, she gathered her things and got out of the car.  Her thoughts turned back to lunch.  Jo and her had been getting along well, then she opened her mouth and everything changed.  With a sigh, she walked to the elevator and pushed the button.  Digging in her pocket for her keys, she forgot to check the mail.

Entering the apartment, she dropped her stuff and immediately went into the small kitchen to get a drink.  After getting a glass of iced tea, she went into the living room and flopped down on the couch.  ‘Well, guess I had better get started.’  Taking a few swallows of tea, she got up and went to retrieve her notebook.  Just as she was opening her bag, the door swung open, knocking her to the floor.

“Oops... sorry Em.” Erin’s voice came as she closed the door.  Reaching out her hand she pulled Emily to her feet.  Emily took a moment to get her notebook and dust herself off before returning to the living room.  “So, how’d your day go?” Erin called from the kitchen.

The phone rang and Emily went to answer it.  “Hello?”

“Hey babe.”

“Hey Sarah, what’s up?”

“Heard you got the job, congrats.  Anywhos, don’t forget the performance.”

“Okay.  I’ll be there, see you then.”

“Bye.”  Emily hung up and waited for Erin to join her in the living room before answering the question.  “It was a day.”

“Ooohh, you don’t sound too happy about that.”  Erin replied.

“Well, how is one supposed to feel when they continuously embarrass themselves in front of their boss, who just happens to be their idol and ultimate crush?” Emily stated with great sarcasm.

“Oh, I see... What happened?” Erin inquired, a slight smirk creeping onto her face.  She couldn’t help teasing Emily.  After all, the woman had been infatuated with the singer since she first arrived on the scene.  Every picture, video, or magazine that had come out that had anything to do with Joana Knyte was carefully stored away in the ever-growing collection of Emily’s.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” came the abrupt reply.  Emily turned her attention to the notebook in front of her and tried to focus.  Jo wanted to see what she had produced thus far tomorrow morning at the meeting.  Emily had agreed without thought.  Now at home, she dreaded the next day... She hadn’t even begun to write.  For some reason, she just hadn’t been able to really concentrate on her work. ‘Oh yeah right. How ‘bout... I can’t keep my mind of fantasies involving my boss.’ Emily shook her head to clear her thoughts and tried desperately to come up with something.

Erin watched her friend struggle over her writing and sighed.  She walked over to her friend and sat down next to her.  Putting her arm around her, she pulled Emily close.  “You know... I have an idea.  Why don’t you write what you feel.  How ‘bout your ex?” Erin suggested.  Emily turned and looked at her for a moment.

‘How I feel?  Hmm… How about I think I’m falling for my boss.’  She then returned to her writing.  The pen seemed to have a mind of its own as it floated across the paper.  A few hours and several crumpled pieces of paper later, Emily stood up and exclaimed: “Eureka!” Grabbing Erin and pulling her into an embrace, she danced about the living room.  After a few minutes, the pair fell onto the couch in a hysterical fit of laughter.

“Congrats! Let me see...” Erin cried while grabbing for the book.  Emily dodged her easily.

“Uhn uh, not yet.” she said.  Rising from the couch, she went to the kitchen and poured herself another glass of tea.  Her notebook tucked safely under her arm.  After downing the entire glass she returned to the couch and plopped down.  “Okay, now you can see.” Erin leaned over and placed her arm around her friend.  Emily cleared her throat and began to read her latest work.  Erin sat back and listened closely.

Years ago I made a wish

A wish for love pure and true

A dream of a tender young heart

A hope for a new beginning

A broken heart…

A love betrayed…

Now longs for another chance…

I want to hold that wondrous gift…

Looking into your eyes…

I see my wish fulfilled…

I see my dream become reality…

My hope is now alive.

A mended heart…

Love’s faith restored..

A new beginning has been given…

I now hold that wondrous gift.

Tears flowed freely as the words touched her heart.  Grabbing a tissue and wiping her eyes, she hugged Emily close.  “Jo’ll love it.  I do.  That was beautiful.” Emily just blushed, a smirk to her lips.

‘Now for tomorrow.’ she thought as she returned to the notebook.

The Meeting...

            “Morning.”

            “Hmmph.”

“Well, I see someone’s not very happy today.”

            “Hmmph.”

“Come on Jo. What happened? You look as though you’re ready to kill anyone or thing that even glances in your direction.”  Jocelyn was only mildly concerned, for she knew her friend too well.  Jo’s rather harsh temperament was always rearing its ugly head.  It had even earned her the title of ‘Ice Warrior’.  Jo just sat there glaring at Jocelyn.  No words came from her mouth.

‘She was just being friendly.  She doesn’t know.’  Jo was upset that she had obviously hurt her friend.  ‘Friend? Well, I hope so.’  Jo continued to stare into the air, ignoring Jocelyn.

Jocelyn eyed her friend warily, concern growing as she saw the sadness behind the baby blues.  ‘What is happening my friend?’

*knock *knock

Jocelyn went to the door to see who it was.  A rather worn Emily stood before her.  It was plain to see she hadn’t slept well.  Her eyes were rimmed red with dark circles beneath them.  She motioned for Emily to come in and be seated, then went back to her chair.  Jo lifted her eyes just in time to see Emily nearly tumble into the chair next to her.  Without thought, she reflexively caught her and helped her into the chair.  Jo’s previous dark mood was replaced by a calm concern.

‘Well, well my friend.  You are truly smitten aren’t you.’  Jocelyn smiled to herself as she witnessed the sudden change in her friend’s demeanor when Emily was near.  “Well, welcome Em.  Did you bring your work?” she asked.  Inwardly she smiled as she realized she had used her new ‘pet name’ for her friend. ‘Friend indeed….’

Emily looked up and smiling at Jocelyn, retrieved her notebook.  “Thanks.” she said to Jo as she proceeded to hand her notebook to Jocelyn.  Jo smiled and intercepted her, taking the notebook herself.  She sat back and began to read through the works.  Emily had been up all night compiling songs.  She had three completed and two in progress.  Silently she watched Jo for some sign as to what she thought.  Jo remained quiet and her face unreadable.  Jo forced herself not to let how she felt show.  The words sank deep within her and touched something she thought long since dead.

After a few moments, Jo spoke. “They’re wonderful. We can work on the music later.” Emily breathed a sigh of relief.  They spent the next hour going over the words and talking about the music for each song.  Jocelyn just sat in awe of the two.  Jo seemed to be at complete peace with Emily around.  The pair were laughing and clearly enjoying themselves.  Joce smiled on them as a tear pricked her eye.  Clearing her throat she tried to get their attention.

“Well, you guys up for lunch?” she finally interrupted the pair.  Both women looked up from the papers and smiled, then went back to their discussion.  Jocelyn shook her head and proceeded to order lunch for them.  “Hope you like Chinese.” she said, but obviously wasn’t heard.  The phone rang and she quietly thanked whoever it was for saving her from utter boredom.

Emily and Jo continued to work on the songs through lunch and well into the afternoon.  Taking a moment to stretch, Emily caught a glance at the wall clock. ‘Oh shit! I’m late.  Sarah’s gonna kill me.’ she thought as she turned to Jo.  Jo wondered what had caused the sudden change in her friend.

‘Friend... where’d that come from? Well I guess we are... are we?’ she wondered.  Emily frantically tried to gather her things.  Turning to look at her companion, their gaze locked and it took all her strength not to just lean forward and kiss those sweet lips.  Jo’s thoughts mirrored her own as their gaze held.  Emily jumped up, breaking the connection, and continued to gather her things.

“Sorry, I gotta go. Can we continue later?” she explained.  Jo nodded and in a flash, Emily was out the door.  Jo just sat there transfixed on the door.  ‘Now that’s twice she’s run out… Could she… Oh shit I nearly kissed her…’  The tall woman just sat there dumbfounded.

Jocelyn watched as Emily sped past her then turned to look in on Jo.  There she sat on her office floor just staring into open air.  They look on her face was priceless.  ‘Oh yeah, she’s got it bad…’  Joce smiled and brought the food over to her friend.

Jumping in her car, she drove to the club. ‘Can’t believe I’m late.’ Emily yelled at herself.

The Club...

Upon arrival at the club, Erika greeted her.  Emily apologized for her being late.  Erika just laughed and led her backstage.  “Well, there you are.  I was about to send the search parties.” Sarah joked.  Erika went to her partner and enfolded her in an embrace.

“See, I told you she’d get here hon. By the by, you’re on in five.” she whispered in her love’s ear.  Dropping a kiss on Sarah’s head, she exited the room, leaving the two friends alone.

“Sorry I’m late Rah.  Meeting went on longer than I expected.” Emily tried to explain.

“Uh huh. I know you get around her and the world disappears.” Sarah teased her friend.  “Well come on. You heard Rik, we’re on in five.” Emily shrugged her shoulders and followed her friend to the stage.  Taking her place behind the keyboard, she began the intro music.  This was only a rehearsal for tonight’s show, but her friends insisted on going through it as if it were the actual performance.

The rehearsal went well and all were pleased.  “So... you gonna tell me what’s on your mind.” Sarah’s voice startled Emily out of her reverie.

            “Huh?”

“You seemed a million miles away there for a moment.” Rik added.

“Well, yeah. I guess I was.” Emily shrugged.  She got up and started to walk back stage before turning and addressing her friends: “I’m gonna take a nap before the show.”  With that she walked off.  Her thoughts were filled with the day’s earlier events.  ‘I almost kissed her… I’m falling… Oh God.’

“You think she’s okay?” Rik asked as she watched Emily walk away.

“Yeah, just tired.” Sarah replied, not entirely sure herself.  She gave her lover a kiss then turned to see Erin enter the club.  Erin walked up to the pair and asked where Emily was.  Both pointed backstage.  The three talked about Emily and the fascinating Ms. Joana Knyte.  Since Emily had begun working for her, there had been a drastic change in her.  All heads nodded as they agreed this might be the answer to a wounded heart.
