Part 1

The day began as all other days had begun.  Buzz… Buzz… Buzz… the alarm clock drolled on announcing the beginning of a new day.  A long, tanned arm reached out and a slender finger shut off the annoying buzz.  The sleepy individual slipped from beneath the silken sheets and quietly sauntered over to the bathroom.

Stepping over to the shower, she turned the water on and turned to look into the mirror.  The sight looking back was far from the beauty people recognized.  Sighing softly, she turned and entered the steam filled shower and allowed the warm liquid to caress her body.  Taking a few moments to savor the revitalizing warmth, she begrudgingly finished her shower.

She padded back into her bedroom and, after drying, began to dress.  A pair of black jeans and white T-shirt were selected and, with a glance to the clock, hastily put on.  Sliding back into the bathroom she took a moment to brush her hair and gaze into the mirror.  Long dark hair fell just past her shoulders, chiseled features, and mystic blue eyes.  With a simple shrug, she walked out of her bathroom and down the stairs.

Grabbing her keys as she walked out, she rushed to her car and took off in quite a hurry.  Traffic was actually in her favor this day and she arrived at her office just in time.  After stepping from the car, she hurried into the building and up the elevator.

“Good morning, Ms. Knyte.” called a sweet voice.

“Good morning, Sylvia.” The tall woman greeted her secretary.  “Any messages for me today?” she inquired.

“I put them on your desk already.  I’ll be right there with your coffee.”  Sylvia replied as she slipped away.

Shaking her head, Ms. Knyte entered her office.  She slid easily into her leather chair and began to go through the day’s schedule.  Tossing the schedule aside, she reached for the messages.  The first few were tossed aside.  Taking a moment to grab her notebook and a pen, she reached for the phone.

“Yes, this is Ms. Knyte, is Jocelyn Regent available?” she inquired.  Sylvia appeared and placed a steaming cup of coffee before her boss.  A silent thank you was mouthed by her boss and was returned by a smile. Sylvia retreated back to her desk, closing the door as she left.

“Hello, this is Ms. Regent.”  Came a soft reply moments later.

            “Hey Joce.”

“Hey yourself!  I’ve been trying to get a hold of you.”

‘Yeah I bet you have.’  Ms. Knyte smirked to herself.  “I got your message and so I called.  What can I do ‘ya for?” she spoke with a soft giggle.  Oh how she loved teasing her overly frustrated friend.

“Geez Jo, can’t you leave a poor girl alone.  Anywhos, I got the resumes you asked for and was wondering when…”

“Come on over this afternoon and we can go over them.” Jo interrupted.  Saying a casual goodbye, she leaned back in her chair and stared out the window.  She was soon lost in thought.  ‘Why am I here?’

Joanna Knyte had everything most people could desire.  She had wealth, fame, fortune, beauty… you name it, she had it.  Yet here she sat in her office looking like someone had just killed her best friend.  That’s what it felt like to her.  She had had love affairs with many, but she had only loved once.  That had been torn from her.  Turning to her desk, she reached into a side drawer and withdrew the picture that haunted her thoughts always.

Two young women, so much in love held each other oblivious to the world about them.  ‘Chris…’  Jo’s thoughts went back to that time.  Christina Reynolds had been her whole world.  In a sudden moment of terror she was ripped away.  A silent tear slipped down her cheek as she recalled holding her love tight.

A knock on her office door interrupted her thoughts.  She slipped the picture back into the drawer and turned to face the door.  “Come in.”

Sylvia entered and handed Jo a packed of papers explaining that Joce had just faxed them over.  Jo smiled her thanks and turned back to the window.  ‘Why?’  Jo’s thoughts once again turned inward.  She had not been in the public eye much since she lost Chris, but at the urging of her friend and agent Jocelyn, she had agreed to start again.  Thirty-four and lonesome, she knew why she had decided to try again.  As a famous singer, she had met Chris at a concert.  She was twenty-one and Chris eighteen.

They fell in love quickly and were virtually inseparable.  Then it happened, she lost Chris and she lost the music.  She hadn’t sung or performed in nearly five years.  The public had basically resigned her to being a recluse.  Her fan support had never wavered though; she was as much loved now as she had been then.  ‘For you Chris… for you.’  She thought as she began reading through the papers sent by Jocelyn.

‘Why do I do this?’  The petite blond wondered to herself as she sat in her living room gazing at the blank paper before her.  She nervously chewed on the end of her pen.  Sighing, she rose and wandered into the kitchen in search of a drink.  Taking the pitcher from the fridge, she poured herself a glass of iced tea and returned to the living room.

“Hey Em, you home?”  A voice called from the front room.

“Yeah, I’m in here.” She called back.

“Hey there.  I’ve got a surprise for you.” Her friend spoke as she entered the room.  Sitting down next to the blond, she handed her a piece of paper.

“What’s this?”  She inquired as she looked at the paper quizzically. She could tell it was an application of some sort, but for what exactly, she couldn’t determine.

“It’s an application silly.  Okay, don’t give me that look.  I got it from a good friend of mine.  It’s a chance of a lifetime.”  Her friend spoke with rising excitement.

“Okay Erin, what is this all about?  A chance in a lifetime…” Em was truly confused.

“Well, you know that there have been rumors about a certain gorgeous woman recently.  That she would be returning to the stage….”  Erin was abruptly cut off by her friend’s gasp.

“You mean to tell me that this application has something to do with Joana Knyte??” Em squeaked.

“Yep, she’s looking for a writer and my friend thought about you and your fascination with said woman.”

“Oh my God!!!  This is a chance in a lifetime.  I gotta get my portfolio…. I gotta get going.” Em rambled as she started gathering her things and rushed through the apartment.

“Em… Em… Emily!!!!” Erin screamed and grabbed her friend.  “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to this Jocelyn Regent’s office to introduce myself and give her the application.  Wish me luck.” Em replied as she rushed out of the apartment.

‘Good luck my friend.’ Erin thought as she stared at the closed door.

************

“Um, hi I would like to speak with Jocelyn Regent please.”  Emily asked the woman at the desk.  The woman looked at her for a moment quizzically before replying.

“Ms. Regent has left for the day, but can I help you?”  The little woman said.

“Uh, no thanks anyhow.” Emily shrugged and turned to leave.  ‘Why did I come here?  Not like I have any chance of getting the position.  Oh well, just another fantasy down the drain.’  Shoulders slumped she turned to leave.

Jocelyn slipped out of her office and waved goodbye to her secretary and headed toward the elevator.  As she neared the elevator, something, or someone rather, caught her eye.  She was a short, blond woman.  Noticing that the woman looked down, Jocelyn went to her side.

“Hey.  You okay?  Can I help you?” Jocelyn spoke as she gently touched the woman’s shoulder.

“Oh. I just had a bad day that’s all.”  The woman responded.  Jocelyn noticed the woman was still rather upset and made a quick decision.

“Hey, I’m on my way to lunch.  Would you care to join me?” She waited for the response hoping she didn’t sound like someone trying to pick the woman up.

“Um.  I don’t know who you are or why you would want to have lunch with me.”  Came the, oh so expected, response.

“Oh I’m sorry.  My name is Jocelyn Regent.”  She said extending a hand.

“Ms. Regent.  Oh, I’m sorry I’m Emily Arbor.”  Emily said shaking the offered hand.

“So, will you join me?”  Jocelyn asked again.  Emily nodded and they left the building.

The pair spoke over lunch.  Emily told Jocelyn about her interest in the position and gave her the application.  Jocelyn was intently looking at the small woman. ‘She’s got spirit.  I think I might just push a little more for her myself.  Jo could use someone like her… friendly.’  Jocelyn mused.  They finished eating and Jocelyn gave Emily her card and told her she’d call.

***********

Jo sat at her desk just staring at her food.  Her thoughts were filled with memories of Chris.  How much she missed her love.  ‘Well, here I am Chris, back at work.  It doesn’t feel the same.  Without you… Nothing feels the same.  I miss you so much.’  Jo sighed and turned to look out the window.

Her gaze caught on a figure across the street.  A young blond woman was entering the building and Jo couldn’t help but stare at the lovely sight.  The woman turned and looked around for a minute then shrugged and entered the apartment.  Jo sat dazed.  The woman was beautiful.

The sound of her door being opened tore her from her reverie.  “Joce, can’t you ever knock first??” Jo kidded her friend.  They had been friends since high school and later Jocelyn became her agent/manager.  Jocelyn knew Jo didn’t need a manager, since she owned her own record company, but accepted the title donned by her friend.

“Why should I, not like you got some sweet thang in here!” Joce laughed.  She sat down in the chair across Jo’s desk and pulled some papers from her briefcase.  “Okay, now the task at hand my friend.”

Jo grimaced.  Truth be told she hated doing interviews and paperwork, but since she worked in close contact with her writer, she preferred to choose them herself.  Sighing she and Joce began to go through the seemingly endless pile of papers.

Time slipped away.  Jo glanced at her watch, nearly seven o’clock.  “Okay, That’s it. I’m done… How many left?”

“We’ve narrowed the choices down to forty.  Shall I set up interviews?” Joce knew the answer before she heard it.  Reaching for her briefcase a paper slipped out of her pocket.  She picked it up and realized what it was.  “Oh wait, here’s one more.”  She said as she handed Emily’s application and resume to Jo.  Neither knew what that little piece of paper really meant.

Jo glanced at the paper and just nodded. “Well schedule her for an interview.”  A short reply and Joce hugged her friend goodbye.  ‘Interesting.’

**********

Three Days Later…

Tap… Tap… Tap… Joana Knyte sat at her desk across from her friend Jocelyn just tapping her pen on the surface.  “Geez, why is it that everyone just wants the position to get close to me?  Is there no one who is really serious about this?”  Jo inquired of her friend.

“Of course there are.  Can’t help that you are gorgeous and famous.”  Jocelyn gave her a rakish grin.

Shaking her head Jo sat and thought for a moment.  She really hated doing the interview thing, but she needed a new writer.  ‘Chris how am I going to this?  I haven’t been able to find the music since you…’  Jo just sat quietly staring into space.  The interviews thus far had left her feeling even worse than before.  “Okay, we’ll try again tomorrow.  I’m going home.  I’m too tired.”

Jocelyn nodded and gathered her things.  Giving her friend a hug she turned to leave.  “I just want you to be happy.  Chris would have wanted you to keep going.”  Jocelyn left the office without waiting for a reply.

Jo sat and thought.  ‘Happy?  Do I even know what that is anymore?  Ah, Chris without you I am empty.’  Sighing, she gathered her things and left her office.  After saying goodbye to her secretary, she left the building.

Her drive home was uneventful.  Now sitting in her living room, she stared at pictures of her and Chris.  ‘So happy…’ A lone tear slid down her cheek as she drifted into sleep.
