Part 5

*ring *ring

            “Hello?”

“Hey Liza, I got your e-mail and fax.  I think it would be best to get protection for your friends.  This woman seems to be moving more toward her ultimate goal of violence and death for Jo and Erika.  I fear the next time, people will be hurt and bad.”  Mike stated.

“Thanks hon.” Liza hung up and called Jo’s office.  The machine picked up almost immediately.  Sighing, she decided to go on a hunt.

************

One Week Later…

“Honey, I’m fine.  I swear.  Not my idea to put the damn table there anyhow.”  Rik grumbled as she stood up.  She had run into the table on her way into the room.

“I know, but it looks best there.”  Rah teased her lover.  Rik grumbled again and decided to go in search of Em and Jo.  Emily was at the bar getting a couple of drinks.  Rik went over and asked her where Jo was and Em pointed backstage.  Turning, she walked back stage.  Jo was sitting in the dressing room with only her pants and bra on.  Rik had to laugh as she watched her friend look around the room frantically.

“Hey Jo, whatcha lookin’ for?”  Rik chuckled.

“I can’t find my shirt.  I’m on in ten and I can’t even find my damn shirt.”  Jo growled as she continued her search.  Rik laughed as she reached behind the dressing curtain and extracted said shirt.  Handing it to Jo she spoke: “You okay?  This is your first performance in a very long time.  I still can’t believe you got us all back here.  Granted this is a small time gig, but still.”

“I’m okay.  Just a little nervous is all.  I guess I decided to play here cause it didn’t require travel and it gives me a chance to become comfortable with performing again.”  Jo slipped the shirt on and started to lace up her boots.  Rik stared in awe at her tall friend.  Jo stood to her full height of 6’2”, tight black jeans, a blue silk shirt open to just above her ample bosom, and biker boots.  Her black hair had recently been cut to an almost crew cut: it was about an inch long on top and spiky, but the sides and back were shaved close (not to the skin).  She looked every bit butch.

“Okay, I was just checking on you.”  Rik left the room and went in search of her lover.  Emily entered the room after her and just stood and stared at her love.  She was still getting used to the extremely short hair cut, but it looked good on Jo.

“Hey baby, you ready?”  She smiled and walked over to give her a kiss.  Jo eagerly accepted the offering and became lost in the kiss.  A knock on the dressing room door interrupted the lovers.

“Hey.  Jo, you’re on in five.  I gotta go get my seat though.”  Joce said as she was leaving the room.

“Joce, heard you got a date tonight for the concert.”  Jo chuckled.  She watched as her best friend turned crimson at her statement.  Joce turned away and left very quickly.

“You are so bad my love.  I’ll see you in a bit.”  Giving her lover a quick kiss, she turned to leave.  She paused before disappearing.  “I love you.  Happy birthday.”  She smiled, and then left.  Jo shook her head and began making her way to the stage.  Erin, Emily, Rah, and Rik were already on stage.  Her back-up singers were poised and ready.  Jo took a deep breath and stood at the edge of the stage looking out at the crowd.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Knyte’s Domain.  Now without further ado, our star:  the Mistress of the Night herself… Joana Knyte!!!”  Came Joce’s voice over the speakers.  The crowd erupted into boisterous applause and shouting as Jo walked out on stage.  Everyone began playing as Jo adjusted her head mike.  Her contralto voice soon filled the auditorium.  After a few songs, Jo paused.

“Thank you all for coming tonight.  My album is filled with songs that inspired me in my career.  This next one is in dedication to the person whom I consider my idol.  So to the “Divine Miss M.”

Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
and you its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dyin'
that never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been to long,
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose.

Jo’s voice rang out over the crowd as the song ended.  The crowd cheered and screamed for more.  Looking back at her band, she nodded her head.  Just as she was beginning her next song a two loud bangs were heard.  Jo suddenly fell to the stage.  Emily and Rik rushed to her side and two more bangs rang out.  Rik flew back onto the stage.  Sarah came running down to her side.  Joce made an apology over the intercom and the police began clearing out the building.

Liza and Joce came running up onto the stage to see what had happened.  Jo and Rik lay in rapidly growing pools of blood.  Digging out her cell phone, Liza hurriedly dialed for an ambulance and back up.  Rah held Rik in her lap, crying.  Emily sat the same way with Jo.  Rik coughed.  “Hey baby, get the number of that truck huh.”  She coughed again and passed out.  Jo was out cold.  The ambulance arrived and the two were rushed to the hospital.  Liza grabbed Joce and ran to her car.  They followed the ambulances.

A dark figure looked on the scene from the shadows and smiled.

************

            “Excellent work.”

            “I’m the best.”

“That was only a warning.  Now to further my plan of getting Emily back.  Sam, don’t forget the date.  I want it over then.  No mistakes.”

“No problem Cole.  Consider the job done.”  Sam replied.  The call was ended and Cole sat at her table looking over her calendar.  Reaching into her case, she pulled out a folder.  Opening it, she read through some papers and looked at the picture.  She smiled and left the room.  The folder lay open on the table.  From the top of the papers, two brown eyes stared into the silent room unmoving.  The name on the folder: Erin Michaels.

*************

Emily and Sarah held each other in the waiting room.  Jo and Rik had been in surgery for the last four hours and still nothing came forth from the doctors.  Liza held Jocelyn as she cried.  Erin still had yet to arrive at the hospital.  Everyone wondered why she wasn’t there.  Liza was more than suspicious.  Everyone turned as the doctor walked into the room.  “Ms. Regent and Ms. Hawk.”

“Yes.”  Joce and Rah rose and looked at him.

“I was told you are family of the patients Joana Knyte and Erika Rozwel.  I have news for you if you’d please have a seat.  Both are in recovery now.  Ms. Rozwel sustained two gunshots; one to her lower leg and one to her shoulder.  Ms. Knyte was shot in the side and arm.  Both women lost a lot of blood, but are in good condition now.  If you will give us a few more minutes, you can go back to see them.  No more than two at a time though.”  Everyone said thank you as he left.

Emily paused for a moment before speaking.  “Joce, he said that you were Jo’s family.  I must have missed something, but I thought Jo and you were just friends?”  She asked somewhat puzzled.

“Jo and I are half sisters.  We share the same father, but different mothers.  I’m sorry we never told you before.”  Joce conceded.  Emily nodded and hugged her friend.  A nurse came in moments later and escorted everyone to see the two women.

Emily went with Joce to see Jo, while Liza followed Rah to check on Rik.  Emily gasped at the sight of her love once more covered in tubes and wires.  She went immediately to her side.  Joce stood behind her and together they held Jo’s hand and cried.  In the other room, Rah held on tight to Rik’s hand.  After only a short while, Joce and Liza said goodbye and that they would return in the morning.

Liza gave Joce a ride home.  As she was getting out of the car, Joce turned to Liza: “Um, can I interest you in a cup of coffee or something?”  She offered hesitantly.

“No.  Thanks though.  I got a lot of work to do tomorrow.”  Liza replied.  Waving goodbye, she pulled away.  Joce went inside and went to the kitchen to find something to drink.  She was too awake and shaken by the day’s events to sleep.  She was searching through the fridge when her doorbell rang.  It startled her and she jumped.  She rubbed her head as she went to answer the door.  Opening it, she found Liza standing on the front porch.  She motioned her inside.

“Uh, I wasn’t expecting you back till tomorrow.”  Joce fumbled.

“Yeah, but I couldn’t stand thinking of you having to face this alone.”  Liza offered and noticed Joce rubbing her head.  “What happened?”  She asked, somewhat worried.

“Oh, I hit my head on the refrigerator.”  She said with a shrug as she led her guest inside.  Liza kept thinking about Erin.  Why hadn’t she shown up at the hospital?  Something was wrong, but what she couldn’t quite figure out.
