“Thank you for volunteering and for talking with me.”
Liza spoke.
“No probs. I’d do
anything for Emily. She’s like a
kid sister to me.” Rik
replied.
“I can see how much you care.
However, it is not Emily that I am interested in.
I need to know as much as I can about this Colleen.”
Nodding, Rik took a breath. “Yeah, we’re supposed to talk about
the bitch.” She scowled.
“Your dislike of Colleen is evident.
Can you elaborate on why you feel this way?
Also, you don’t mind if I record this do you?”
Liza questioned.
“Nah, go ahead. Let’s
see. Hmm.
I guess I could put it as simply I’d dislike anyone who beat my
girlfriend, put her in the hospital and tried the same with me.”
Her eyes darkened with withheld anger.
“I see. You
said she beat your girlfriend. Sarah,
I assume. Can you go further about
what happened?”
“Yeah Sarah, love of my life.”
Moisture coated her eyes with unshed tears.
“Well, all the reports from the hospital we can give you copies and
the police report you can get. However,
I can tell you what happened before the hospital and the police. I’ll give you what I remember.” She said with an anger, hurt and sadness-laden voice.
Liza nodded.
“Begin when you feel comfortable.
I am sorry to have you go through this.”
“It’s okay. If this
will help, then I don’t mind telling my story.”
Taking a deep breath, she began: “Well, a bit of background.
Sarah and Cole dated for about a year before I came into the picture.
Emily and I have been friends since junior high. Anywhos, about five years ago I met Sarah.
At the time she was still with Cole.
Sarah, Emily and myself soon became friends.
We had met at Pride Fest.” She
paused to take a drink of water. “Anywhos,
Sarah came to my apartment a couple of months after we met and told me she was
leaving Cole. I asked her why and
she told me of the control and abuse. I
was livid. You see, I knew I cared
for Sarah. In truth I had fallen in
love with her from the moment we met. Sorry,
back to the story. I went with her
back to the apartment she shared with Cole.
Cole wasn’t there. We got
her things and she came to stay with me. Cole
got wind of everything and showed up at my place that night. She begged for Sarah to talk with her. I guess it worked. I
was at work when this took place, so I’ll tell you what happened when I got
home. I walked in the door to find
Cole standing over Sarah. I lost it
and punched her. She fell back and
I rushed to Sarah. There was blood
everywhere. Cole came after me with
a bat and we struggled for a few minutes, then she took off.
I wanted to go after her, but stayed with Sarah.
I rushed her to the emergency room and called Emily.
Cole had beaten her up really bad. Sarah
ended up in the hospital for a week.”
The long held tears flowed like rivers from her eyes as she remembered.
Liza got up and wrapped Rik in her arms.
“I’m sorry. I’m so
sorry.” She whispered. “You can go.” Liza
handed her some tissues and watched her walk out of the office.
‘What a bitch!! I hardly know them, but even I want to kill her.
Please Goddess let me get this one before something even worse
happens.’ Taking a drink of
Pepsi, she turned off the recorder. The
office door opened and Sarah walked in. She
looked as if her best friend had just died.
“Hey.” She
whispered.
“Hi, I assume Rik talked to you.”
Sarah nodded. Liza offered
for her to have a seat, which she took. “I’m
really sorry to put you all through this. I
want to help. Can I record this?”
Sarah nodded and began: “I know you do.
This is just a little hard. You
see, after the night she beat me, Cole simply disappeared.
When she came back about three-and-a-half years ago, she swore she had
changed and gotten help. She acted so differently.
It was like when we first started dating. Cole was all sweetness and kindness. Rik and I were together by then, but there was definitely
something between her and Em. Anywhos,
they hit it off and began dating. Everything
seemed fine.” Sarah shook her
head and looked down. “That
was until about three months into their relationship.
Cole started the same shit she had done with me.
Kept asking Em about where she was and whom she was with.
She even accused her of cheating. Em
is a true blue person, cheating isn’t her style.
Cole apologized when Em confronted her and they moved on.
However, Cole just got worse. Cole
and I had been together for only a year. Em took everything Cole dished out. Then after two years and four months, she wanted out and
left. She went to live with Erin.
Erin is my best friend and we had recently formed our group.
Erin took her in and helped her get her life back.
Cole disappeared again and we thought that was that. Until now.” Her
last statement was barely heard.
“How do you mean that Cole started treating her the same way she
treated you?” Liza inquired.
“Em told us after she left what had happened.
Cole had been beating her for several months and she had had it.
Then she showed us the bruises. We
took pictures and filed for a restraining order.
It was denied because the judge thought there wasn’t enough evidence.
Then a little over seven months ago, she met Jo and we all finally got
the old Em back. She is full of
life and glows with love. The two
of them finally have happiness back in their lives.
Joce could tell you more about why Jo was so alone and unhappy for so
long. Em and her fit like two
halves of a whole. Their joy has
been tainted by the reemergence of Cole. I
wish I’d stopped her when I had the chance.”
Liza stopped the recorder. Looking
toward the door, she saw Rik. She
motioned her over.
Rik wrapped her lover in her arms and pulled her close and they left the
room together. Sarah turned just
inside the office and turned to Liza. “I
hope you find her and make her pay. Let
love live and destroy the plague that she is.”
With that the couple left. Emily
peeked in and entered.
She sat down across from Liza and waited.
Liza took a drink of her soda and sat down. She pointed to the recorder and Emily nodded.
“I know going over the past is hard for you, but I appreciate this.
Knowing who I am dealing with will help me catch her and make her pay for
what she has done to all of you.” She
began.
“I understand. At first
meeting Cole seems to be a nice and caring person, but underneath lays a demon
of control and power. I wanted to
believe she had changed from what she once was, but I learned different all too
quickly. The beginning of our
relationship was wonderful, then went downhill rapidly.
It started with wanting to know where I was and with whom, then
everything else. About eight months
before we ended she started beating me. At
first, just slaps, then more and more aggression.
I finally had enough. I left
and she disappeared. I thought it
was over, then she pops up out of nowhere and starts harassing and threatening
the woman I love. All the while she
is swearing that she will have me back. I
just want it over. I love Jo and we
want our happiness. I think we
deserve it after all this time and so much heartache.”
Emily was crying now. At the
sound of her love’s cries, Jo burst into the office.
“It’s okay baby.” Jo
nodded mutely.
“Thank you. Please tell
everyone thank you for me. I’m
gonna head out now and start working and see what I can come up with at the
precinct tomorrow. Tonight I need
to analyze everything I’ve been told today.
I hope you don’t mind, but I may call in a friend of mine.
She’s a psychiatrist who deals with people who have control problems
and abusers. I think she can help.
I’ll call you tomorrow to set up another meeting.”
She shook hands with Jo and gave Emily a hug.
Jocelyn came in and showed her out.
Upon reaching Liza’s car, Joce spoke: “I hope you can get her.
If there’s anything I can do, please call me.”
She offered.
“Thank you. I’ll give
you a call.” With a wink, she
pushed a piece of paper into Joce’s hand and got in.
Jocelyn just stared after the car as she took off.
Opening her hand she read the note:
I
will call if I need anything.
But
please feel free to call me
For
anything YOU may need.

***********
*knock *knock *knock
The woman peered through the peephole before opening the door.
As soon as it opened, in strode a woman dressed in black leather.
She removed her shades and pocketed them.
Sitting at the table, she waited for the other woman to join her.
As soon as the woman sat down she spoke: “You
got my money?”
“Yeah.” The woman
said as she handed over a briefcase.
“Thanks Cole.” She
counted the money and, once satisfied, closed the case.
“So you want her to suffer then bye-bye birdie.”
“That’s the idea. I
want what’s mine back. You got
the date.” Cole asked.
“Yep, it’s all arranged.”
With those words, she got up and left the room.
“Not long now my love, you and me together forever.
Morning is dawning.” She
laughed. Night was falling outside
as she exited the room in search of her prey.
She pulled up in front of a large, blue house. Sitting in her car, she twirled an envelope in her hand.
She exited the car and went to the door.
She rang the doorbell…
***********
The door opened and out stepped Jo.
Looking around for a minute, she went to go back inside, but something
caught her eye. Reaching into the
mailbox, she withdrew the envelope. There
was nothing written on it save a ‘J’ with a red slash through it.
She put it in her pocket and looked around again.
Shrugging, she went back inside and closed the door.
She failed to see the dark figure sneak away.
She returned to the living room and rejoined her love on the couch.
“Who was at the door?” Emily
inquired.
“No one, but I found this.”
Jo showed her the envelope. She
sat back and opened it. Taking out
the letter, she read:
Thief,
I am the sun and I shall bring
an end to the Knyte. Dawn is
coming.
Emily is mine and mine alone. You
have
stolen her. You have not headed
my warnings. Now you shall
pay.
-- C
The letter had a picture of her at the bottom.
In the center of her chest was a big red spot.
Under the picture was written: ‘Dawn is coming.
Death to the Knyte.’ Jo
took the items and put them in her briefcase.
Pulling her love close, she led them to bed.
‘Just wait Cole. This
time I’m going to win.’ Jo
changed into her boxers and got into bed. ‘I
wont lose you my love.’ She thought as she turned out the light.

Detective Liza DeLitto sat at her desk researching anything that had to
do with Colleen Caliss. Sarah had
provided her full name and with the information gathered from the interviews,
she was now working on any and all criminal history.
Picking up the phone, she dialed a familiar number.
“Dr. Auroré’s office. How
may I help you?” Came a sweet
voice.
“Hey Jen, is Sunshine in?”
Liza piped.
“Hey Liza. She’s in,
hold one sec.” Jen chuckled
her reply.
*buzz

“Yeah Jen.” Came
a deep voice.
“Liza’s on the line.”
“Thanks.” She replied then waited for the call to be forwarded.
“Hey Liza, what’s up?”
“Hey Mike. I got a case
I’m working on that I’d like your opinion on.
Also I would like you to meet the parties involved.”
Liza explained to her friend.
“Sure, but why me?”
“Well, the person I’m after has a history of abuse and control
issues. I’d like you to take a
look at all the information and see what you think.
Maybe give us a direction to go in.”
“Can do. Can we meet
tomorrow at my office around one? I’m
free the rest of the afternoon.” Mike
replied.
“Let me check with the others and I’ll give you a call back to
confirm.” They each said
goodbye and hung up. Liza wrote
down a few notes, and then proceeded to call Jo.
“Ms. Knyte’s office.
How may I help you?”
“Is Ms. Knyte available?”
Liza said.
“Yes, one moment please.
May I ask who’s calling?”
“This is Detective DeLitto.”
“Okay. One moment.”
“Hello Liza.” Came
Jo’s smooth, sultry voice. “What’s
up?”
“Jo, hi. Can you meet
with me and my friend tomorrow at one?”
Liza inquired.
“One sec let me check with Em.”
Jo was gone only a minute.
“Sure, we can do that. Do
you need anyone else to come?”
“I don’t think so, but I will let you know if I do. Thanks, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Each said goodbye and hung up.
Liza called Mike again and confirmed the meeting.
Now, with the meeting arranged, she returned to her research.
So far she had the police report, hospital reports, and the failed
restraining order. Entering
Colleen’s name into the database, she searched any criminal history.
A few minutes passed and the screen filled with information.
One by one, she read through the record.
As she read each piece, the more and more she became worried for her
friends. ‘I’ve got to get
this one soon.’ She went back
to her research and printed out as much information as she could get.
***********
Sarah was returning from the backroom, when she heard her partner’s voice.
Erika was speaking with someone on the phone and was quite upset.
Sarah gave her lover a glance and took the phone from her.
“Hello, this is Sarah Hawk. How
may I help you?”
“Hey baby. Miss me?”
Came the familiar voice.
“What do you want?” Sarah
asked, trying to keep her voice calm.
“I want my girl back, that Knyte woman stole
her.”
“Cole, you need to leave us alone.
Please just leave.” Sarah pleaded.
“No can do, Emily is mine. Dawn
is coming. You better watch out or
you’re next. Your little woman
will pay for taking you as well. The
dawn is coming. Death to Knyte.”
The line went dead. Sarah
turned to her partner and burrowed herself in her embrace.
“Oh Rik. Why can’t
she just leave us alone?” Rik
rubbed her partner’s back. Turning
to Erin, she asked her to close up. Erin
nodded and the couple left. Rik
called Jo from her car phone and told her they were on the way over.
Jo agreed.
