CHAPTER 3

It was four days later when Kennedy pulled up and parked in front of the Synod building on Adelaide St. that housed the Bishop's office. Getting out she stretched and realized that she wasn't looking forward to meeting the Bishop. But, as Toronto was a bunch bigger than she had been expecting and she was a little later than planned because of the traffic, she headed straight into the building and got directions to the Bishop Don's office from the receptionist.

As she walked into the Bishop's office, Kennedy was startled by the appearance of the Bishop's administrative assistant. Instead of the typical older, matronly woman that Kennedy had come to associate with a Bishop's office, she was met by a tall, 30'ish athletic looking woman dressed in blue jeans and a Xena Warrior Princess t-shirt.

"Hi, you must be The Rev. Kennedy Frazer. I'm Julie. I'm pleased to meet you. Did you have a decent drive up from Texas?"

"Hi Julie. Just call me Kennedy. The drive was ok. Thankfully, I had good weather all the way."

"Good stuff. Take a seat and I'll let the Bishop know you're here." Julie was about to walk away from Kennedy towards the Bishop's office, but something about the look on Kennedy's face made her turn and say, "She doesn't bite you know."

"She?"

"You are here to see Bishop Dawn?"

"Yes, but isn't the Bishop a man?"

Julie started to laugh. "Nope, she is a "D-A-W-N" not a "D-O-N". No wonder you were looking uncomfortable about meeting the Bishop. You thought you were going to meet another middle aged, hairy arsed man." Still laughing Julie grabbed Kennedy's arm and dragged her in to meet Bishop Dawn.

As they walked in, Dawn looked up from her papers and green eyes met blue. Time seemed to stop as Kennedy and Dawn stood there looking at each other.

"Bishop I'd like to introduce the Rev. Kennedy Frazer. Kennedy, Bishop Dawn."

At the sound of Julie's voice Kennedy regained her wits enough to walk over and offer the Bishop her hand to shake. As the blonde haired Bishop took Kennedy's hand Julie could have sworn she saw sparks flying. Certainly Kennedy and Dawn felt the sparks.

"I'm glad you've been able to join us," said Dawn as she disentangled her hand from Kennedy's. "You must forgive me for staring at you. I just had the strongest feeling of déjà vu I've ever had in my life. Have we met before?"

Kennedy looked at the Bishop and gently shook her head. "Not that I'm aware of, but having said that there is something very familiar about you."

"Oh well, we'll figure it out one of these days," laughed the Bishop. "Here, have a seat. Would you like some water?"

Julie had been expecting the meeting between the Bishop and Kennedy to last about 30 minutes given how busy Bishop Dawn was and how much she had started to regret taking Bishop Stephen's problem child off his hands. She was surprized when it was over an hour before the Bishop called her back in.

"Julie, Kennedy was telling me that one regret she had about packing up and coming to Toronto was that she had to leave her baseball team. Joanne is out for the season isn't she…does that mean that you have a spare spot on the roster?"

"Yeah it sure does. What position do you play Kennedy?"

"Generally center field although I can pitch a pretty fair game." Kennedy smiled at Julie and asked, "Do either of those positions help?"

"Yep, Joanne was our center fielder before Kathy took her out last week. You game to play tonight?"

"Sure, I'd love to. Where and when?" Between the very positive discussion with the Bishop and finding herself with a team to play with, Kennedy was becoming more and more sure that God was looking after her by sending her to Toronto.

Before Julie could answer the Bishop asked, "Julie, would you help me out and show Kennedy how to get home? She's agreed to help me out with the wretched budget by staying with me in that monster of a house. I've just got to finish reading the Human Rights Task Force's report before I head home myself. Let Kennedy know where and when the game is and I'll get her there. Kennedy, here's your key."

With that the Bishop nodded to Julie and Kennedy and sighed as she pulled out the task force report to read.

As Kennedy sat on the porch of the Bishop's house and waited for Dawn to come home, she couldn't believe the afternoon she'd just had. Her meeting with the Bishop had been, well, electric. She shook her head as she thought about the sparks that had flown between the two women. Although they hadn't been able to figure out where they knew each other from, there certainly was a connection…Kennedy could feel it. Not a word had been spoken about the troubles she had experienced in Texas. Bishop Stephen's name hadn't even been mentioned. In all sorts of ways Kennedy felt that she had been given the chance to make a fresh start.

When the topic of housing came up Kennedy had been a little surprized when the Bishop asked her if she would mind sharing the bishop's house with her. After Dawn had explained the money crunch that the Canadian Anglican Church was in (law suits as a result of abuse that had taken place years ago at the northern residential schools) Kennedy agreed 'The challenge,' thought Kennedy 'will be to keep my hands off the Bishop. She is, after all, my boss and a bishop bound to uphold the rules. Damn the rules!' Never before had Kennedy been so attracted to anyone.

When Julie had brought her to the Bishop's house and had given her the tour Kennedy had been very impressed by the size of the place. It had been built in the Victorian era, located in a very well-to-do part of town, and had obviously been intended for a family of at least six plus live- in household help. The diocese owned the house and obviously wanted to accord the position of bishop with a certain amount of prestige. For Dawn, a single person, it was hugely oversized and Kennedy understood why Dawn had said that she'd really appreciate some company in addition to the budget concerns.

Kennedy had been given the whole north wing of the second floor that contained a large airy bedroom, a library, a study and a full bath. Dawn had the south wing and only the grand staircase that rose up from the entrance hall separated the two wings. On the main floor there was a huge living room, formal dining room, music room, large study and an oversized eat-in kitchen. Kennedy smiled when she saw the kitchen because it looked as if nobody had cooked in it for a while…a long while.

Kennedy's musings about her seeming good fortune were interrupted by Dawn pulling into the driveway.

"Sorry I'm so late. What time's the game?" asked Dawn as she bounded up the stairs to the porch.

"Julie told me it was at 7:30 at Riverdale park."

"Good, that's nice and close so we'll have time to eat. Hope you like chicken." Dawn smiled as she placed at bag of take out in Kennedy's hands and led the way into the house.
