This
is my mailing list story which rapidly got out of hand. As a brief explanation
as to how this started, we began writing a fanfic collaboration. I did part
one,
and no one took up part two for quite a while. This was my lame attempt to get
people to start writing. Unfortunately for me, Diamonddog didnt believe me
when I had Xena say "Ill behave!". I had to defend myself, and things
went on from there ...
Major votes of thanks to ForevaXena and Diamonddog for agreeing to be a part of this, and all the others for mucking around with me ... FX, DD: for sneaking me into your schedules for beta reading duties, I am eternally grateful :-)
ForevaXena's Note: Jordan has done a brilliant job of capturing the craziness of all involved. She is quite prone to taking actual quotes from many of us and using them in this story! I hope you'll enjoy reading this as much as we all have. Oh, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to read Jordan's other stories so that you'll more easily recognize the supporting cast!
Join our "ForevaXenites" mailing list and you may find yourself involved in our antics too!! The fun never stops <BG>
Note from ForevaXena (3/6/02): With the recent passing of our dear friend, Diamonddog, in mind, I wrote to Jordan and requested that she somehow add closure to a story that has been ongoing for some time now. What she came up with is not only a brilliant stoke of writing genius at a very difficult time, but a heartfelt, loving and absolutely perfect tribute to our mate, DD. Thank you, J J
(You will read mention of another "listscape" in this story. The bards of our mailing list are well underway with a new series of adventures that will soon be posted on the site. The craziness hasn't stopped, we've only added more players <EG>)
Note from Jordan
(3/5/02): ...Gods
know it was the absolute hardest thing I've had
to write for a very, very, very long time.
PART
SEVEN (Conclusion)
"OKAY EVERYONE, TAKE FIVE!" Jordan rematerialized in the clearing, closing her eyes and sighing. One by one, all the creatures they had been playing with, barring Xena, Gabrielle, Callisto and the dragon, slowly disappeared in a puff of pink smoke.
FX and DD were started awake, Jordan noticed with satisfaction.
"J?" FX yawned mightily and stared at the pale Australian with considerable alarm. "What’s the matter?"
"It’s not me, mate, it’s DD."
"What’s wrong with me?" DD stared at the Aussie with considerable alarm.
"I’m going to have to take you out of this mailing listscape." Jordan collapsed down onto the grass next to the two mailing list participants.
"Why? I’m having fun."
"So was I." Jordan sighed and took her glasses off her nose, polishing them on her shirt front, wondering how to phrase what was to be said next. "I can’t leave you here."
"Why? What did I do?" DD looked curiously at the pale and shaking Australian.
FX reached out a gentle hand and squeezed the omnipotent being’s arm comfortingly.
"You didn’t do anything. It’s what was done to you." Jordan impatiently wiped away a stray tear. "You have to go and be a muse now. Dianne needs you to be one for her in our other listscape." Somehow the Aussie managed to produce a crooked grin. "She’s up against Jules and myself."
DD, FX and Jordan all exchanged a glance.
DD eyed the other two, sighing. "I guess that must mean I’m - "
"That would be right, DD." FX gathered all her courage into her hands and looked at the shorter woman. "Don’t worry about Dianne. We’ll take care of her. Won’t we, Jordan?"
Jordan was too choked up to speak, thankful that FX could find some words for them both, so she simply nodded.
Gradually, a gentle golden glow began in the now achingly empty clearing, gradually surrounding them, gaining in strength, comforting them.
"Jules," said FX softly.
"Jules." Jordan nodded, taking a deep breath.
"Thank you, Jules." DD watched Jordan and FX, giving them both a crooked smile. She reached out and pulled them into a close embrace. "Take care of yourselves. Remember, I’ll still be around in one form or another, be it a fictional character or Dianne’s muse."
This time Jordan and FX both wiped away tears.
"We know, mate. But that doesn’t help in the slightest. We love you, mate and I guess we’ll follow behind you some time." Jordan tried a small smile on for size. "Pick your method of leaving, mate. Is it to be the dragon or the bike?"
The Aussie waved an arm, and a large motorcycle appeared behind them.
DD smiled gently. "I’ll take the bike."
Jordan quietly handed her the keys. "Go that way, mate." She pointed over the hill characters had been trooping over for months. "Keep going straight and when you hit the fork in the road, you want the side with the golden tarred road. I think we all know where that leads. And no, the other doesn’t lead to anywhere nasty - just on a ride I used to like to do through the National Park. If you want to do that one it’ll bring you right back to the fork."
DD straddled the bike and put the keys in the ignition. She started it up and gunned the engine, grinning over the roar. "I have to get moving. I can feel it. I think I’m needed somewhere else."
Xena, Gabrielle and Callisto all stepped forward, each of them pulling her into a gentle embrace, murmuring gentle thanks and goodbye.
FX leaned forward for another hug from the mailing list participant. "Be safe."
DD nodded. "You too."
Jordan gave her a hug as well. "Goodbye." Jordan’s voice was a whisper.
With expert ease, DD rode the bike forward, then did a smart u turn, riding slowly through the golden mist that held other figures from the ForevaXenites whispering their own farewells.
As she crested the hills, the golden light faded and a single lemon meringue pie materialized in mid air and flew straight at her head, missing it by a whisker, drawing a startled grunt from the biker.
FX stared at the Aussie in fond exasperation. "What the hell did you do that for, silly grrrl?"
Jordan’s smile was small, crooked and very sad. "I couldn’t help myself. If she’s going to turn me into a child I’m going to behave like one."
FX nodded, then turned to face Xena, Gabrielle and Callisto. "May I?"
Jordan nodded. "By all means."
FX waved an arm at Xena and Gabrielle. "You two belong in the other listscape." Slowly they faded out of existence, resigned to being toyed with for another undetermined period of time.
"You." FX met the mad brown eyes of the blonde psychopath, now oddly subdued. "You’re going back to where you came from." Slowly Callisto faded out of existence.
FX and Jordan gazed around the clearing they had been playing in for so long, quietly bidding it a fond farewell. The dragon waited patiently for them.
"Time for us to go into the new clearing again." Jordan took FX’s hand and led her over to the dragon. "Up you go. We’ll be back in no time."
FX nodded and allowed the omnipotent being to help her to climb aboard the dragon. Jordan mounted just behind her, and the dragon quietly took off without her usual fanfare, sweeping across the still landscape and out of the listscape.
Gradually, rocks and trees, quietly and without fanfare, disintegrated and were no more as the clearing dissolved into the formless void it had once been.
THE END?...No, just a new beginning - exactly the way DD would want it <BG>
