The band of amazons had been traveling for a week now and the going was painfully slow. Every time they started making headway something else would happen. Gabrielle felt that these were not random happenings, but clearly designed to slow them up. But the question was, why, and who? She was so terrified of losing Xena for real this time that she was positively frantic to get to that mountain and to the Fortress Soul Keep. She had to find Karmen no matter what the cost to herself. How could Gabrielle conceive that this was just a joke perpetrated by Hecate as a revenge on Ares?  

Ephiny rode up to Gabrielle and spoke to her Queen… “Gabrielle. I know you want to get there as fast as you possibly can. As we all do, but it won’t do Xena any good if we are too exhausted to do anything!”

“We will get her back, Gabrielle. No matter the cost. This I promise you,” Ephiny said as she gently touched her Queen’s arm.

“I’m sorry Ephiny… Of course… we will rest.” Looking around Gabrielle figured that this was as good a spot to make camp as any so she raised her hand and halted her mount. The other Amazons were relieved to finally stop. They set about making camp.

After the camp was set up and the evening meal was consumed, Gabrielle and Ephiny were sitting together by the fire talking.

Callisto was sitting with the rest of the Amazons gazing lovingly at Gabrielle. This was not lost on Gabrielle, who was disgusted by it. All she

Gabrielle of course knew none of this was in character for her, and sensed that it was Xena’s warrior spirit inside of her that wanted to kill Callisto so badly. But she had to admit that it wasn’t such a bad idea!

“Gabrielle. Do you think that Ares had a hand in this? After all he’s always trying to separate you two.” Ephiny questioned.

“Well, it could be, but…. It just isn’t his style. He’s more the hit’ em over the head type. If you know what I mean?”

Just as she said this her skin started to crawl and she jumped to her feet and in the same motion pulled out her sais.

Ephiny and everybody else in the camp were ready for any action that might happen.

“Well, if it isn’t the irritating little blond. Amazing! You’re able to do the same trick Xena can do. Hmm. How does it feel to have Xena inside of you?” he asked with a smirk on his face and his hands on his hips.

“You bastard! You did this. Bring her back NOW!” Gabrielle yelled angrily, as she started towards Ares menacingly.

In a bored voice Ares said, “Do you really…think you can hurt me? Come on little girl,” he snarled. Beckoning Gabrielle to try. “Listen Blondie. I didn’t do this. Hecate did it to get back at me. She thought this would be a good joke to play on me.”

“You really expect me to believe that, Ares? You have been making Xena miserable since I have known her. You would do anything to bring her back to you and be your Destroyer of Nations again. Why would Hecate use Xena to hurt you?” she asked suspiciously.

“Because, you irritating short person, she wanted to thwart my plans. By doing what she has done to Xena she thinks she has.” Ares answered.

“None of your business, Blondie. Look! Do you want to get Xena back or not?”

“Of course I do, and you aren’t going to stop me. You got that?” Gabrielle warned.

Just as Ares was about to continue, Callisto ran at him with her sword drawn and that Gods awful scream of hers. She past Ephiny and was about to stab Ares. Or at least that is what she thought. He shook his head from side to side, as he moved and punched her in the jaw knocking her out cold.

“You were about to tell us how you were going to help us get Xena back,” Ephiny said sarcastically.

He ignored Ephiny completely, and turned towards Gabrielle, “Here’s my plan…...”
