Babylon Five:
The Kelly Leick Chronicles
Part Two: A Day In The Life
by Daniel Stevens
DISCLAIMER: This story is based upon the Book Series 'The Psi Corps Trilogy', by J. Gregory
Keyes, which is itself based upon the TV Series 'Babylon 5', by J. Michael
Straczynski, which is property of Babylonian Productions, and Time-Warner.
It is especially based upon the second book of the series, titled 'Deadly
Relations'. No copyright infringement is intended.
SYNOPSIS: This story takes place three years after Jenny Winters' graduation from the Psi
Corps Academy, in 2201. It attempts to depict a typical day in the life of
a veteran Psi Cop named Kelly Leick, now a Precinct Captain, and her best
friend, an administrative assistant and former rogue telepath named Jenny
Winters.
All
special notes can be found with the preceding story, titled 'Jenny
Winters and the Psi Cop'.
Early
morning, some time in the year 2201, in the Greek capital of Athens.
The
alarm goes off at 5 a.m., as usual. A tall, slender woman with short cut
platinum blonde hair awakens. She looks across the room, to see the other
bed still occupied by a slightly shorter blonde woman.
'Hey,
Jen, time to rise and shine.'
The
telepathic wake-up call proves to be more effective than voice or shaking would
have been. Soon, Kelly and Jenny are dressed in sweats and athletic shoes,
and are both outside, in the darkened city, doing their warm-up exercises.
These
are followed by roughly half an hour of intense calisthenics, and topped off by
a three kilometer run. Neither of them are worried about who they might
run into in the pre dawn gloom. No sensible mundane would even think of
messing with a fully trained Psi Cop like Kelly Leick.
Once
they are back at their starting point, both women begin a series of cooling off
exercises.
During
their hour of PT, they had talked over various things, or rather, Kelly had done
most of the talking, via p'talk. Although Jenny is much too weak a teep to
actively reply in kind, the fact that the Psi Cop was also surface scanning her
best friend the entire time, and that Jenny, as always, refrained from trying to
block her, made it possible for them to communicate both ways without the former
blip using up precious breath talking.
Soon
after they get back, Jenny has breakfast ready. This consists of the usual
fare for them - sausage, pancakes in maple syrup, and poached eggs, with orange
juice to wash it down. Clearly, their North American roots die hard.
After
breakfast, they shower together, get dressed, and have enough time to get to
work on time, at the Athens Precinct of the Metasensory Police Force, also known
as the Psi Cops.
********************
The
scene this morning is the usual one of organized, efficient chaos that is normal
in any big city police station. To a mundane, it would seem quieter than
the scene would indicate it should be. This is, however, due to the fact
that a lot of the conversations are going on via p'talk, rather than voice.
Kelly
Leick is at her desk, studying a rogue file on her terminal. The look on
her face is one of disgust at what she is reading, and concern for the
well-being of *any* innocent people who might run up on this particular blip.
Unlike some Psi Cops, she doesn't like to see innocent normals get hurt by a
certain breed of dirt bag any more than if they were teeps.
'The
sooner someone gets *this* one off the streets, the better!'
Just
then, she hears a very distinctive knock on her door, and looks up, smiling.
'Come
on in, Jen.'
Jenny
Winters does so, and has a seat where her boss and best friend indicates she
should. She is carrying a data crystal.
'So,
what do you have for me?'
"Here's
the latest hunt list for you, with classifications.", as Jenny passes the
crystal to Kelly.
'Thanks.',
smiling warmly. Then, 'Jen, come on over here. I want you to have a
look at something.'
Jenny
gets up, and comes around the desk, to stand beside Kelly. Placing a
gloved hand on Kelly's shoulder, she looks at the data on the terminal.
'What
do you make of that?'
After
studying the file for a moment, Jenny shudders.
'Kelly,
please tell me he's not here in Greece. That guy is bad news from the word
'go'.'
'I
don't know if he's here, or not. But it's best to be prepared.'
'I'll
give you that! Scum like Portis Neillson are what give all blips a bad
name.'
Then,
Kelly turns, to look straight at Jenny.
'I
know you don't like talking about your time as a blip, but back when you were
with the Dexters, do you think they would have recruited someone like him?'
'I
seriously doubt it, Kelly. Not unless they were desperate.
Otherwise, they wouldn't have touched a sociopathic thug like *that*, except
perhaps for a suicide mission.'
After
a moment, 'Yeah, that would make sense. That way, they would have been
able to strike a blow against Psi Corps, *and* rid humanity of a particularly
dangerous piece of scum at the same time. Well, one of us will get him,
sooner or later.'
'I
know, but what about the innocent teeps and mundanes that he'll hurt in the
meantime?'
'That's
why I'd prefer sooner rather than later.'
'To
think that the Resistance has sunk so low, as to actively seek out thugs like
him as potential members.' A moment later, 'On the other hand, it could
also mean that they're on their last legs, and the days of having to fight a low
intensity conflict with our own kind are numbered.'
'Always
the optimist, huh, Jen?', with a loving, yet amused, smile.
'Yeah,
Kelly, I know. That's what they thought back in '89, when I got busted.
Well, if Walters hadn't have escaped at the time, it might well have worked out
that way.'
'Instead,
during the three years he had left at that point, he refashioned the Resistance
to where it no longer needed central figures like him and the Dexters to
function as their heart and soul.'
Then,
Kelly puts in the data crystal that Jenny had brought her, and begins to study
it. Jenny turns to leave. She has more work of her own to get back
to.
'Remember,
Jen. Lunch is on me today.'
"Gotcha.",
as she leaves her boss' office.
********************
Later
that day, Kelly and Jenny meet at the main elevator.
"So,
where do we eat today?"
It
is their custom to eat at a different place each day, with different cuisine,
whenever possible.
'Well,
there is this new Ethiopian place I've been wanting to check out, right under
the Acropolis.'
"Sounds
like a winner to me."
They
head out.
A
few minutes later, they are taking their seats at one of the outside tables.
A waiter comes up, with two waters, and two menus. As he distributes them,
he speaks.
"It's
not very often that we get Psi Cops here." Then, "You're not
looking for someone here, are you?"
Kelly
just smiles evilly. The waiter backs down.
A
moment later, as if to head off a possible comment from Jenny, 'Hey, I could
have done worse. I could have made some crack about blips being where you
find them.'
"Ugh,..
true. In both senses of that phrase."
Soon,
the waiter returns, to take their orders. Kelly orders first, then Jenny.
"Coming
right up."
Later,
as they are eating, Jenny breaks one of the unspoken rules of their personal
outings. She starts talking shop.
"Kelly,
that file you had me look at this morning. Do you think there's a chance
he's here, in Greece?"
'Jen,
there's always a chance that any given rogue might be in any given location.
But you know the rules. No shop talk on our free time. Not when
we're supposed to be enjoying each others' company, and this fine day.'
"Sorry."
'It's
okay. I won't bring it up again if you don't.'
"Sure
thing."
********************
Some
time later, the two women are up on the Acropolis. Kelly is busy taking
pictures of the Parthenon.
"Now
I know why you brought your camera to work this morning, with an empty
crystal."
'Well,
what's the use of being assigned to the Athens Office if you don't take
advantage of the opportunity to see the sights? Besides, Ancient Greece
has always fascinated me.'
"You
and the entire Western World, for centuries."
'I
know.'
"So,
are we still on for our weekend in Delphi, Itea, and Galaxidi?"
'As
if you had to ask.'
********************
Mid
afternoon finds them back at the office, where Kelly checks her email and voice
mail correspondence from Teeptown, and other locations, both on and off world.
She also finishes up her day's quota of paperwork. Jenny is doing the
latter, as well. Her job consists of making sure the precinct's files are
up to date, as to who's on the most current rogue lists, who has been
apprehended, the disposition of cases, and other such items of importance to any
police department.
At
seven that night, they head out, together as always. Two other Psi Cops
watch as they leave. Then, one speaks, via p'talk.
'You'd
never suspect that Ms. Winters was once a blip herself, as thick as she is with
the Captain.'
'You
know what they called her at the Academy, don't you?'
'What?'
'Psi
Cop's Pet.'
'I'm
not surprised.'
********************
A
half hour later, they are back at their apartment, and back in casual civvies.
Kelly is fixing dinner - her way of unwinding from the day. Jenny has
picked out some soft neo-rock music, and put it on.
'Nice
selection.'
"Thanks."
Then,
Jenny walks up behind Kelly, and starts giving her a back rub.
'Ahhh,
that feels great, Jen. Your back rubs make me glad I pursued our
friendship. That, and a lot of other things.'
'Well,
it's nice to know that I'm appreciated.'
Dinner
is served soon after, and consists of lamb chops, cut into strips, and cooked
over rice, with various vegetables and spices mixed in. A variation of a
Chinese recipe.
"Kelly,
this is great! As usual."
'Thanks,
Jen.'
********************
Later,
after finishing dinner, and doing the dishes, they plop down on the couch, and
watch an old movie together. The one they choose is 'Chill Factor', from
just over two centuries ago, in which one of Kelly's remote ancestors played a
cold-blooded mercenary, who died rather horribly at the end.
"Kelly,
it's amazing just how much you look like that actress did back then. If
you and she had lived at the same time, I'd have sworn you were twins."
'Well,
Hudson Leick was my many times great grandmother.'
"Speaking
of your ancestors, didn't you once tell me that your grandmother joined the old
MRA about a year after it was formed?"
'Yup.
Between Desa Alexander and Heidi Leick, they just about wrote the book on Psi
Cop procedures.'
"So
I'd heard."
Then,
Kelly changes the subject.
'So,
Jen, have you made up your mind about you and Nikolai Borisev being a genetic
match?'
"I
think we'll do it the old fashioned way. Especially since he is rather
cute, and has a great personality, to boot."
'Well,
that should quiet down certain rumors about you and me that have been floating
around of late.'
"Really."
Then, "Speaking of which, when was the last time you saw Claude
Heckman?"
'About
six months ago. Now that he's been detailed to the Mars Office, it's not
as easy keeping in touch as it used to be. Still, both of us have been
able to keep up with our two kids' progress at the Academy.'
"So
which one do you think will become the Psi Cop? Jack, or Jenny?"
'Hopefully,
both of them, since both have tested out as P12's.'
"Congratulations,
Kelly!"
'Thanks,
Jen.' Then, 'Now that the movie's over, if we're going to haul out at
five, as usual, I think we'd better call it a night.'
With
that, the two women proceed to get ready for bed. Soon, both are sound
asleep.
