Green Is The Color....

"I’m sorry, Xena, but I don’t love you like that," the bard stated, almost unemotionally.

"What?"  The warrior’s head snapped up from brushing Argo.

"I s-said," Gabrielle restated, "I don’t love you like that.  My feelings go as far as friendship, but nothing more."

Tears brimmed in Xena’s eyes, threatening to spill over.  She stiffened; her visage became stoic and unfeeling.  She resumed brushing Argo until she was satisfied with the result.  She turned to Gabrielle, who had busied herself with preparing the evening meal.

"Why are you telling me this now?  And after everything that we have been through?  Did that kiss mean ANYTHING to you?"  The warrior was close to losing it again, but she steeled herself.  Gabrielle looked at her with soft brown eyes.  ‘Wait, something’s not right here,’ Xena thought to herself.  ‘What is it?’  She again focused her attention to the bard.

"Xena, all that we’ve been through means everything to me.  As for the kiss?  Well, I’m not sure."

"You’re not sure?  All my heart went into that kiss, even if it wasn’t my body!"

"I do not know what else to say, Xena, except for this," Gabrielle said, her own voice beginning to quiver.  "You are the best friend I’ve ever had.  You have taught me a lot about myself that no one else ever could.  And you also taught me how to be strong.  It wasn’t easy to tell you that I only loved you as a friend."  Her brown eyes spilled over in a flood of tears.

Xena stood there pondering whether she should comfort the bard or just back off.  There was still something not quite right.

Xena shrugged off any doubts, sat down, and wrapped her arms around the weeping bard.  Gabrielle shifted and brought a dagger down into Xena’s back, wrenching a painful scream from the warrior.

The scream brought Xena out of the fitful slumber.  Her body glistened with cold sweat, as she turned to her bedmate.  Sleepy green looked at her inquisitively.

"Xena, honey, are you alright?"

"Yeah, that was one Tartarus of a dream.  First, you tell me you do not want me as a lover, just as a friend.  Then I notice you had brown eyes, and then you tried to kill me."

"Xena, you know I would never do that....you know why?"

"Why?"

"Because, love, you are everything I could have ever hoped for....heart, body, and soul."

Xena swiped tears that were beginning to fall.  ‘She’s always had a way with words,’ she mused.  ‘Not that I’d ever complain!’

She pulled Gabrielle to her for a quick kiss.  The bard smiled; content to be in her love’s arms.  The lovers laid there murmuring sweet nothings and stroking each other’s hair until Morpheus claimed them for slumber.

THE END
